11/30 (AT) AMBG 148 OJT trail day 4, +5 86, PMBG 115 SMALL MEALS???

I like to start Layla, on smaller meals. She eats 2 3oz cans ff classic daily. I'm able to do 3 meals daily sometimes 4, between 8am till 8pm. I was thinking 3/4 can in AM, 1/2 can mid day & 3/4 in PM. Are these smaller enough?

That AMBG was a little concerning, but the fact that she brought her number back down without insulin is reassuring. Layla, try to stay a little lower, 'k? We want a nice, smooth, successful trial for you and your mamabean. Then we get to party!

I think your feeding idea sounds like a good plan. She might be having higher ambgs because she's going a long time during the night without eating. If there's any way to get her a meal in the wee morning hours that might be helpful. If not, then just go with what you can do.

Ok, I'll try to get an early small meal in. If so, I test AMBG @ 8am. What time should I get that meal in before? Thank you

There's no precise schedule for feeding cats. The point of small frequent meals is that they are less of a burden on the healing pancreas. When Layla eats, her pancreas is stimulated to put out a little bit of insulin. That insulin brings down the blood sugar. In many cats, we see that effect about 3 hours after the cat eats.

That's why on the OTJ trial directions, it says if you have a higher test at your normal shot times, to retest about 3 hours later and see if it's come down some. If it does come down, that tells us that the pancreas is working putting out a little insulin, which then brought down the blood sugar.

If she's going for 12 hours without eating, it isn't surprising that her morning blood sugar is a little bit high. Feeding her at any point during that 12 hours might help - i don't know. Cats can really vary in this, so it's a matter of trying something, seeing if it helps. If not, try something else. If i were a superhuman, i'd feed her about 4-5am, but let's be real. Unless someone is up during that time anyway, that's going to be difficult. Many people use a timed feeder to feed their cats when they are gone or during the night - that only works if there aren't other animals that would get the food first. I used the Petsafe 5 compartment feeder to feed punkin when I went back to work. It's a really nice feeder.

 

Thank you Julie I do have other cats. Unfortunately, I cant use timed feeder. If someone is up, I'll do 4/5am feed. I was unable to do +3 check. But I checked the +5, that showed it came down
