Maybe a bit of a bounce going on today but no worries that will pass soon enough and his spreadsheet is already looking quite lovely with all of that blue and even some green. Nice work Belle :cat:

Belle's ears all red and swollen from the poking of the BG tests... poor thing...

Here's your post from yesterday ...try to remember to put the link to your prior day's post in the new post so it's easy for us to quickly go back and see what's been going on

They may look a little rough, but remember...the edges of their ears have very few nerve endings....think about how often cats get into catfights and the edges of their ears get the worst of it....Mother Nature knew not to put many pain receptors there ;)

@Chris & China
thanks, i will try to do that tomorrow

Belle actually felt pain when i poke him, as he kinda screams (n jumps a little) everytime... n tries to get away too...

oh, his poor ears do look miserable. Let's try to figure out how to help them. No wonder he's yelped.

Are you trying to hit the vein? you want to just hit the edge of the ear, not the vein - the vein is more painful.

They look bruised. If you apply pressure after you've gotten the test, that can help prevent the bleeding that causes the bruising. I'd poke, touch the test strip, then immediately apply pressure with a bit of tissue. We cut up paper towels into small strips and had a pile of them along with the test supplies in a bowl next to the sofa where we tested punkin. Even 10 seconds might be enough to prevent bruising.

Do you have the "Where Can I Find?" thread bookmarked? In the bottom section there is a post on "Testing and Shooting Tips" with a picture of where you want to try to poke. There are lots of tips on that thread that might help you.

I'd avoid his right ear for a day or so - it looks especially bad. You can move the poking spot up or down along the edge, although avoid the cartilage in the lower part of his ear.

Has anyone suggested the Neosporin ointment with pain relief for you? The pain relief is amazing - try it on yourself. I put it on my foot where the cats had run across and scratched me and it worked incredibly well. Completely took the owie out. The ointment is greasy and that helps prevent the blood from soaking into the surrounding hair and skin after you've poked. Makes it easier to bead up and be able to draw it into the test strip.

Some people put it on 20 minutes before poking to numb the area a bit. I always put it on at the end of every day - I put a generous amount on (the directions say 'slather') and in the morning wiped off the excess. It will goo up the strip if you don't wipe most of it off.

Punkin's ear was like new every morning and we used the same ear for 2.5 years and you would never have known he was tested multiple times every day. Vets always looked at his ear and marveled at how good it looked - i think it was apply pressure and using the neosporin.

If those tips don't help his ear, mention it again and let's see if we can figure out what will help him! Good luck!

@julie & punkin (ga)
Yes, i use cotton pad and apply pressure on it after poking, and i had the Neosporin cream, just switch to ointment today. Sometimes when i was poking, he moved, so the needle scratched him too. So, today i didn't bother to use the pen, just the needle.

I try to aim to the outter of the ear, not sure if i hit the vein. but usually there are not a lot of blood. only one time, there was more blood.

You're probably not hitting the vein, then. Hitting the vein puts out so much blood it can look like a crime scene! One time I got punkin's vein and at the same time he shook his head - blood spatters everywhere, including on my face! hahahahaha

I hate it when they move as you're poking - it can really make a big owie.

There are some cats sensitive to the Neosporin - Marje's Gracie is one of them - so you might keep an eye out and see if you think it makes it worse. His ears do look unusually tender.

o, that time was not that bad, just a bit more blood than usual. probably did not hit the vein then.
a lot of times i poke him, there is no blood or not enough blood, so i end up having to poke him multiple times...

i just tested him PMPS @ 1030pm, his BG is way high @ 347 !!! omg

As you poke, his ears will grow more capillaries. In a couple of weeks you'll get blood every time. Then everything is easier. In the meantime, your poking is stimulating the growth of more capillaries, so it's not for nothing.

Don't worry about the 347 - just take advantage of it and get a good night's sleep. He may be bouncing from the good cycles yesterday and the day before.
