THANK YOU... ALL for the tremendous support and concern and VINES, last night.
    :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

I haven't posted for months, but some of you may recall that last February I took Wynken to Ohio State Vet Univ. to have an evaluation by a feline diabetic specialist, because he just didn't seem to respond to insulin the way other kitties do. He was on Prozinc at the time. He had a tip to tail exam and many things were ruled out. Actually nothing of note was found.

Dr Chen Gilor started him on Lev at that time. While initially promising, we have never achieved very good regulation. :( Also, I am gone too much to push his dose and do TR... I never know in advance when I'm not going to be able to get home to check him during the day, so I conservatively have been moving his dose in tiny increments using the digital calipers. But this crisis is not about his diabetes...

I am absolutely overwhelmed at how supportive you all are, when I haven't even been on the board! :bighug: With all of my other cats, and a very demanding job I just don't have time to post daily. But this is the first place I thought of when I was so upset last night - so Thank you!

I was able to sleep for about 4 1/2 hours, but in the middle of that, the doctor called with some preliminary test results.

His BG was *very* high (they measured it in the high 400 to low 500 range), can't recall numbers... Too sleepy. I had explained that I had switched to a human meter, and that I kept my alpha track 2 only to check him occasionally, and that I knew there was a difference in how the meters read. I told him he was on levemir, but they decided to use what they had, she kept calling it "Regular" ...So pPresumably Humalin R? But he is not wanting to eat (does not surprise me with all that's going on). She said she offered him "diabetic canned food" My priority today is to get back down there with his normal canned favorites. I sure hope he'll eat for me!

She also gave me her & a specialist's assessment of x-rays they had taken of his heart and lungs, that she said were not indicative of heart disease necessarily, but that the cardiologist she had consulted with agreed that the heart was "slightly enlarged".

His urine was very dilute - but that could be because my local veterinarian had given him some Lasix before we went down there (as well as heparin and a pain med.)

Then she described all of his blood results… And I was extremely sleepy, so I didn't catch it all, but I feel fairly knowledgeable about each of the blood parameters, so as I heard it I felt I absorbed what she said. Nothing indicating kidney or liver issues.

The big "flag" is that his white blood cell count is extremely high. I believe she said that it was neutrophils, and one other type of white blood cell. She said that it indicated some sort of infection (Obviously) or even cancer. :nailbiting:

Today he will be referred to their internal medicine specialist with a cardiac consult to continue to understand the clot. They will do an ultrasound of his abdomen to look for mass/tumor.

I will post more updates when I can, when I know more. :bighug:

I hope the cardiologist will do an echocardiogram which is the only way to dx HCM. Doodles vets missed his HCM/CHF and in fact they literally said "it's not like he has heart disease" and sure enough 1 month later when I took him to a cardio vet the eco showed severe HCM and CHF.

It is likely R that they are using which is an in and out insulin that lasts about 4-5 hours and is good for pulling those numbers down. Hopefully Wynken will eat for you today.

So glad you posted Cara. We're all here for you and sending truck loads of continuous vines and prayers for you both. :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

Yes! Thanks Karen... She had said that to me before I left, that he would get an echo today. They started Plavix last night, and continued heparin. We'll see what today brings. I'm headed back (90 min drive) in about an hour. I have to be with him! My boss is going to be annoyed about end of year stuff... I won't finish things I should.

If he was a 13 yo HUMAN everyone would understand. But I learned long ago to just say I have had a personal emergency and take a vacation day.

Guys, I am on the road and using the voice feature on my phone to dictate this to you… I received a call from med vet just as I was about to leave the house that he has taken a turn for the worse. They did an echocardiogram and have definitely found underlying heart disease. During the procedure He became distressed and started panting as well as some odd neurological twitches in his face that the doctor thinks may be related to clots in other parts of his circulation, perhaps affecting his brain.

Needless to say I am out of my mind worrying about him, and at this point I am trying to mostly observe the speed limit as I try to get down there so at least he will not be alone when he dies.

Continuation of prayers and hopeful thoughts are most appreciated, but I think it this point it's just a matter of when. So so scared that he won't make it until I get to be with him! My very greatest fear is that he will feel alone among strangers…And I do not want him to suffer!

    All,

I have been here at the facility for about an hour, speaking to his physician, about everything that is wrong, and all of the possible outcomes. Thankfully, finances are not an issue… so I am able to make the very best choice for the heart of my heart.

Wynken has had a lot of damage to his hind legs and he is on extremely strong painkillers… And he is still alert... and he knew me when I spent 20 minutes with him in the back. I am grateful for the palliative care that has him seeming as good as he does right this moment.

However, I know in my very soul that I have to let him go. He's having a lot of competing medical concerns… And they are all familiar to me because I've done that dance before with other kitties.

I would spend every dollar I have & every waking moment of the next few weeks rehabilitating him, if I thought that it would be a good outcome.

But I need to make the decision that is best for HIM. And that is to not put him through anything further. Too much possibility for more pain/trauma. It devastates me thinking of what could happen....

After visiting with him in the intensive care unit I am now waiting in a very pretty room for them to bring him in and need to spend some time with him before we put him to sleep :(

They said I can take as much time as I would like. I've seldom had that luxury in the past…

    My heart is exploding :arghh:

Almost a year ago, I was in an almost identical situation with Gabby. Despite the heartbreak, it is an act of love to decide what is best for your kitty even though it is at odds with your desire to never let go. The pawprints that are on your heart are there forever.

Fly free and land softly Wynken.

My heart is breaking for you :bighug::bighug::bighug:it is the ultimate gesture of profound love but one that taxes the human heart that holds that love to its breaking point. There are no words that can ever adequately convey what my heart wants to say to you right now so sending vines and hope you feel what my words can't say:bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

I'm going to share my thoughts on where Wynken is heading...:rb_icon:
I have a picture of the rainbow bridge in my mind. It is a beautiful bridge covered in millions of tiny sparkling bells. When each new cat arrives it shimmers and all of those sparkling bells move just enough to make the most beautiful sound...the GA kitties are there all around and the new cats bell is added to the bridge and the melody...

I am sure that Wynken bell will add a beautiful new note to that melody:bighug::bighug::bighug:

    (((Cara))),

I was afraid to log on to the Board today, and my fears were realized. I am so very sorry that Wynken's name has been added to the much too long list of FDMB kitties who went to the bridge in 2016. I am beyond grateful that you made it safely to the vet in time to say goodbye and get some cuddles in. You gave him the greatest, most loving and selfless gift today, in spite of what it costs you. I hope you feel the love and support from your family here as we cry with you and for you. Never doubt that you gave Wynken's the best life possible and the gentlest crossing.:bighug::bighug::bighug:

Wow. I have never experienced such a massive outpouring of love and help as I have over the last 24 hours..... No question this was the worst day of my life. And Wynk is my fourth kitty this year.... But all of you know the unique facets that go with the sugar-dance.

I would love to have time to write back to each one of you individually, but as you can probably imagine after little sleep and then the day I've had I feel rather like I've been run over by a truck.

Before I turn in, I would just like to share that I brought his precious precious body back home with me (to take to MY vet for private cremation) and spent more time saying goodbye, as well as what I consider to be an important thing... Showing his sister (Blynken) that he was gone. I think that was a good thing to do. Plus I really wanted to pet him during the sunset, on his own familiar sunporch.

He is at peace and I TRULY hope there's a way to actually see and meet him again. I have to believe that. I just can't stand it otherwise.

Goodnight my sweet loving L&L friends. :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug: You have meant the world to me today on a day when I have otherwise been alone. I wish I could hug you all...

Ironically, I may start posting, or at least commenting again in this forum.... because where else are people going to understand the bereft feeling of not starting the morning with an AMPS and a warm rice-sock?

cat_wings>o My Angel Wynken, the best boy I've ever known!!!

I was glad you were able to be with him as he crossed. He was surrounded with love.

Cara, I'm so sorry it was time for Wynken to leave. Had the exact situation with Smokey in October. After they evaluated and inserted catheter, bought him to us and gave us time with him. They came back and asked if I was ready. All I could do was sob no but Smokey was ready.

It is the kindest, most loving unselfish act to give our babies. Setting them free from pain and failing body.

Prayers and hugs for you. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

I am so very, very sorry for your losses this year but especially for the loss of your sweet Wynken. Letting them go is never, ever easy but it's the last act and gift of love we can show them when they are ready. We form an extra special bond with our sugar kitties. There are too many of us here who understand this loss and the ensuing change to our lives when we are no longer caring for our sweet babies.

    Fly free, sweet Wynken.

    Dear (((Cara))),
Wynken is at peace and content because he knows how much you loved him. All of our GAs are gathering around him, welcoming him to the Bridge. He is "in good paws" there until that wonderful day when you will meet again.
Fly free, sweet Wynken. Watch over your family and send a sign that all is well. You are much loved.

    In deepest sympathy,

Cara, I am so sorry you have lost your sweet Wynken. What a caring, wonderful Mom you were for him - always looking for the best care for him. Of course, he knew how much you loved him, and was grateful every day for his loving home, sunny places to sleep, good treats to eat and your warm lap to cuddle up in for pets. You can be so proud for the way you have always cared for and about him, and the wonderful life you gave him. I hope, someday soon, the memories you have will give you joy and peace and smiles.

Oh Cara! I am so so sorry to hear this. You were such a wonderful mom to Wynken and you did so much for him. He knew always how much you loved him, as did we.

You gave him the best life he could have and you made the best decision in the end. It's so hard, I know, but it was the right thing to do.

Sending you many hugs my sweet friend...please take care of yourself now. Let us know if you need anything at all...and remember we're here to listen if you feel like talking. But don't feel tempted to try to reply to us all personally...it isn't necessary. :bighug:

:arghh:I appreciate so much all your kind messages - they have been like balm to my raw heart. I found today REALLY HARD. :(

Almost every other kitty I have ever lost had been in decline, and over 17 years old. So this was a SHOCK. Still feels unreal.

One kitty death was somewhat unexpected (aggressive cancer, found after she turned 17, and had been feeling poorly even with "ok" bloodwork) But I had almost 3weeks with her (my Bat Girl) after diagnosis, and could prepare.

The image that came to me today was of a physical person in a black cloak showing up at my house and GRABBING Wynken and STEALING him- running off into the distance. I am so MAD at that. It's like he was stolen by a bad person. :banghead: I want to scream "Too young!"

I am in so much turmoil too because for about 15 months I have been working at getting a job / transfer to Denver.... Massive perseverance in working every angle to make that happen... So, TODAY (of all days) I was called and offered the position I needed to get.:nailbiting::confused::po_O:blackeye::):arghh: This is the gamut of emotions I was feeling, after that call. How could this good news come to me EXACTLY 26 hours after saying goodbye to my precious baby Wynken at 1pm yesterday?!?! They called me at 3pm today.

I'm not even happy. I'm angry and numb. And then I'm sobbing because he will never see the beautiful place I picked out and bought 4 years ago, to move to, with he and Blynken in mind (and all the other kitties too). I've waited so long for this and the last year has been a huge effort to "get there"... And now it's here. Will move in February....

Blynken, who has slways spent nearly every minute around him for over 13 years (litter mates) is really missing him tonight, I can tell... OF COURSE. I am trying to hold her and play with her hard to tire her out with the red laser dot... Which she loves, but she is feeling lonely and it's breaking my heart.

I am usually the strong one and people turn to me for help, advice, support, and I mostly stuff emotions and hide my feelings... And just keep going...

But this is crazy... Wynken is gone and now (finally-yay???) I get my job and need to gear up to move. I think I may unravel....

Dear Cara, I can only imagine the emotions you had today with saying goodbye to Wynken. Perhaps the universe is giving you the "gift" of the job you have so diligently prepared for to help you stay busy and to NOT unravel. Are you able to take some time off between now and the new job to help get back to an even keel and be able to forge ahead with strength and confidence?

As always, lots and lots of hugs and vines of support and comfort.

Thank you so much Bobbie! I actually do have some time off… Starting tomorrow and I'm going to be flying out to meet my fiancé in Denver for Christmas and New Year's. I will be back on the third. I'm sure that being away from the house and having the cat sitter take care of all the kitties will allow me some relief… she is the best cat sitter in the world! The absolute Epitome of what you would want a cat sitter to do for your babies… I am a lucky lucky woman in that regard.

Other than I am going to be extremely worried about little Blynken.

Sarah, thank you from my heart... I see that you posted this exactly one year after losing your sweet Max. :bighug:

Blynken is my primary concern now... And I just hate to leave on the 25th for 10 days because all I want to do is hold her... She and Wynk lived seperate from my other cats. As deaf litter mates they never integrated with the others and enjoyed a large sunporch and outdoor enclosure. So now, she is really alone, knowing only him. :(

I may need to figure something out for her in the new year so she is not so alone...

The other civvies are stable so it's ok to leave them for a few days (mostly... I do have a young girl with a huge mammary tumor). I have an amazing cat sitter who loves all of them as much as I do.

I know this morning that we will all be alright. Thanks again.

You probably don't need another cat, but what about adopting Blyken her own little kittie to be with just her on the sun porch?

    Bobbie-

Yes! I want another cat, or 7.... Especially would love to adopt a diabetic cat in need, through DCIN. But with the impending move and everything it would not be fair to the rest, or to the wonderful man I'm finally (after 6 years!) going to marry soon. He's so supportive and loving with all the cats I HAVE, but it would be quite another thing to adopt one (or 7) more, like I would like to.... ;)

Meanwhile, I'm so happy to have a temporary solution, maybe... My cousin helped me find this online last night and I ordered it to be here TOMORROW before I leave:

    Joy for Cats

I ordered the white one of course. I'm hoping that just looking over at it will reassure her. I plan to have the sitter move it occasionally to different places he liked to lay.

She and I spent a long time together this morning. The sitter will too....

You feel cheated; so have I at times, and the accompanying anger tends to mask everything else.
But don't worry, because that mask will blur and vanish. Your heart will re-appear. Wynken's love for you will triumph.

Cara - this is all such a massive turn of events - it's hard to wrap one's head around this
It does seem like some kind of message from the universe - such sorrow with losing Wynken so unexpectedly but then such incredible relief the move now settled and the job came through (maybe it was Wynken nudging it along) and getting married to this great guy. Wow!!
Is there any way to take Blynken with you to Denver for the 10 day trip?

    Dear Cara,
I'm fairly new to LL and I apologize for not writing when I first read your condo about Wynken. I felt such heartbreak for you and also the memory of a similar recent experience, that I could not put thoughts into words.

Our near 24 year old Maine Coon, Bo, joined the spirits in October, within a week or so after he became partially paralyzed (both hind legs and one front leg) by what might have been either a clot or spinal tumor. Each beloved and each situation is unique. But the time alas always comes for us to make choices, the hardest of choices because of the love shared, and with the deepest of love and respect for our beloved. I believe that they know and cherish that we are honoring the pact we make together to not suffer.

Your love made Wynken's life in this world joyful. That same love makes his journey in the next life lighter. That love will always be with him and with the Universe of all spirit.

There are times when I crumble in tears missing Bo when I realize that I am preparing one less dish, his. I haven't yet been able to put away his favorite cuddle toys. But he is also a joyful presence, a great comfort.

I hope I am not upsetting you. The passages of loss and grieving are so tender and oft tenuous.

You are a wonderful mom to your Wynken. And as I have experienced in these months in LL and in many crises including Bo's passing, we are not alone in these journeys. Blessings abound even in sorrow.
With hugs heart and vines for sweet dreams.

    Sina...
Thank you for sharing your thoughts and feelings. I am so very sorry for your loss of Bo! How incredible that he was 24 years old…. It doesn't seem to matter how long we have with them, it is never enough! You are correct, though… That we are not alone. I have lived alone for over 15 years, but I have found many like-minded and like spirited people online. There are not very many people where I live and work that totally understand the way I feel about my cats, like the people do here.
I do have three close girlfriends that think I'm a little crazy to have this many cats… And I probably am! But they are very supportive and very loving when I have a loss.

I appreciate what you wrote, it was very sweet.

I apologize for not offering my condolences sooner.

As cat lovers, all we can hope to do is to give them the best life possible during their pit stop on Earth. From what I can read, Wynk enjoyed a beautiful and joyous life with you. And when the time came to move on, he was blessed to be surrounded by your presence, in a serene place, and to have your boundless love light the way to the next part of his grand adventure.

He'll forever be your Christmas angel.

Fly free sweet Wynk. Make sure to let your mama know that you're checking in on her from time to time :rb_icon:

@Cara and Wynken (GA) I am new to this site and I did not get to know you or Wynken. But I feel the love and heart break you are sharing. Maybe Wynken knew he wouldn't make the trip with you and you may have missed the opprutunity and all the hard work if he'd stayed. I believe the universe knows what we need and definitely our fur babies kmow. Maybe this was his gift to you too. Wynken will see this beautiful place you have chosen, you just have to take him with you. I still talk to my fur guardian, and she's been gone since 2011. Warmest hugs and healing light to your broken heart.
