Today I had to leave work early because of flu symptoms. So I am not really functioning at 100%. So about 45 minutes ago, I tested Simon's bs. It was 187, I fed him and then injected 1u of lantus. I just sat up in bed thinking.oh no..I wasn't supposed do that. I think I am feeling so miserable myself, I was on autopilot. HELP

  2. Re: OMG...i gave insulun when i shoulndt have.

OK, a little bit more info.

Was the shot given at the correct/normal time?
And what sort of numbers have you been seeing lately?
Did he eat at shot time?

Just FYI, a lot of people shoot Lantus on a number in that range. But it's easier to do so when you've got some historic data to back you up.

And just for my information.... do you have higher carb food available, and test strips if you need them?

All I can advise at this point is that you check his BG 1 and a half to 2 hours past the shot time.
Let me know on the questions above, and I'll be able to help you out.

first off, in case the board goes down, there's a facebook page owned by Rebecca (webmaster here). just want to put that out there in case cause i know the board was down earlier today (normal day to day stuff and advice giving is done here but in case of board crashes, just know there's another place to go where you'll find other members)

    https://www.facebook.com/#!/groups/62167000201/

second, are you gonna be able to stay awake for a bit? or is someone else there that can do testing? if yes to either, take a deep breath and just plan on doing some testing in the next few hours ok.

what numbers you get will determine what actions have to be taken ok. so don't panic yet

ok, first calm down. stuff happens.

now let's figure this out, what time was this shot - meaning how many hours after the morning shot did this happen?

this may not be a big deal, do you have any high carb food available - such as anything with gravy? may not need it, but best to be prepared, just in case and if you can answer Carl it will help us to help you.

Thanks guys for your help. The 187 was just about 12 hours after morning bs of 337. His premeals have been running mid to high 300 to low 400. Then at peak insulin, mid 200 with on time low of 95. My alarm is set so I will make sure I check him. Yes I have high carb food.

  6. Re: OMG...i gave insulun when i shoulndt have.

    OK, I think you're okay.

If you can test him at +2, do that. And we'll base our "what to do" on that number. Lots of us here, and we've "done this" lots of times, so you aren't alone with this.

do you have a spreadsheet? if not, this may be a good time to set one up and attach it to your signature.

if you shot close to the 12 hour mark chances are this really is no big deal, but certainly a good wake up call that we always need to pay attention...an idea going forward is to set an alarm at the 12 hour marks, this way you will always know when it is time to shoot ....just a thought....

we will stay with you this evening to make sure he is safe.

    Ok. You can handle this.

How many days has he been on this dose?
Is he fed meanl, or is he free fed? If he is fed meals, does he seem hungry now?

  11. Re: OMG...i gave insulun when i shoulndt have.

I would break out the gravy style food and give a spoonful. We want to slow the drop down. Can you do that and test again thirty minutes later?

He has been on this does for a little less than 2 weeks. I just started keeping track on the spreadsheet for about a week after finding this website.
I feed him with each insulin dose..can and a half of the Fancy Feast Classics.
Actually, he is always hungry and right now is no different.

yes Carl...I will do that now.

  14. Re: OMG...i gave insulun when i shoulndt have.

You just want to ration it in teaspoon sized servings. Hungry is good, but we don't want the "scarf and barf" thing happening when we're trying to slow down things with the food.

i agree with Carl, I'd want to slow the drop down at this point, especially if you are sick.

how sick are you? that also needs to play into what decisions are made. if you have it bad, we might need to toss this cycle to the wind and get him way up so that you can get some rest.

Breathe. You're on top of it and you've got eyes on.
If the board should go down, go to Facebook and we'll help from there.

What you are going to do is
    Check
    Feed a spoonful
Wait 15-30 minutes depending on how he's doing
And repeat until he has 2 or more successive rising numbers

You may need to stay up past bedtime. Coffe, tea, or hot cocoa may help with that since you are ill.

Just in case, have you got a friend who can come over? You're not feeling well, so a friend would be good support to have. If you share city and state, there may be a member near you, too.

  17. Re: OMG...i gave insulun when i shoulndt have.

    Agree with LynnLee.

A lot depends on how you're doing. If you end up really sick, that's not a good thing for you or Simon.

  19. Re: OMG...i gave insulun when i shoulndt have.

    Simon's Mom,

Can you go back to your first post, and edit the subject/title? Could you change it to PMPS 187, +2~ 86" and then add whatever number you get at +2.5? That'll help people see what's happening. You can remove the 911 too, since you've got a few people helping you out.

Just when you have a minute.

    thanks,
    Carl

OK, another spoon of gravy style. Do you have karo? If so, add a few drops to the food.

    Test again in 30?

Repeat teaspoon of food w/ karo, if you haven't already.
    Check in 15 min

83...he wouldn't eat food with karo on it so I had him eat the food and rub some karo in his mouth.
Do I feed him and give Karo again?

You're on Lantus, so you may be doing this for a few hours due to how long it lasts.
The Karo and gravy will wear off fast, so yes, repeat in 15 minute increments.
You need to match the incoming Lantus.

    Watch his behavior, too.

  28. Re: 187 PMPS, +2--86, +2.5--58

You can let him lick karo of your finger, or try mixing it with just the gravy from the can.
83 is good, but we want to get him a little bit higher, I think.

    88. Has no want for the Karo syrup no matter what it is in. He actually stuck up his nose at me.
So I am having to fight him to get it in him.
He is acting like his normal self which is amazing.

He's not super low, so hunger hasn't kicked in.

Have you got an oral syringe (child's oral syringe?)

  31. Re: 187 PMPS, +2--86, +2.5--58, +2.75--83, +3--88

I've never tried it "straight up" but I've heard karo is pretty nasty tasting. You got honey or maple syrup? If not, just the gravy might do the trick.

There have been some problems with the Board. In case it locks up, please print out the instructions in this link. It is a step-by-step guide to handling low numbers.

You're doing fine with steering the numbers. The idea is that you test, if numbers are dropping, feed a teaspoon or two of food -- HC if necessary. Repeat the process every 30 min. until you see that the numbers are stable or rising for two consecutive tests. Then repeat in an hour.

You need to be aware that as the HC wears off, numbers may wobble around or drop again. Simon's not in any danger -- the 50s are a safe range it just doesn't give you a large margin.

As for making a mistake, you didn't! Many of us who use Lantus shoot far lower numbers than a 187. It's scary the first time. We also don't have any data to look at in order to lend you a bigger hand. So, for now, your glucometer is your best friend. As long as you have your meter, strips, and food, you're in control of the cycle.

If Simon is refusing Karo, you can use any syrup -- maple syrup, honey, etc. -- if you need to. He may do just fine with the gravy from HC food. In fact, given that he's in the 80s, gravy will be fine.

You guys have been a God send. Thanks so much. My family is home so I am going to get some rest while they look after him. But I am setting my alarm for every 1/2 hr to check him unless you think it should be more frequent.

  35. Re: 187 PMPS, +2--86, +2.5--58, +2.75--83, +3--88

You can give him a bit of the gravy style food if he's hungry.

Glad you can get a break, and I think stick with the 30 minute routine for a couple more tests? Depends on the next one. If he's rising, then you could go with one hour instead of 30 minutes.

You are now entering the time when the Lantus will be working the hardest. He barely budged in 15 minutes, so I'm thinking another teaspoon of food is in order.

Can you get 1 of your family to pitch in and learn how to test? Then you could alternate testing with each other and grab a nap.

Keep up the process 'cause the Lantus is still working. Maybe mix the high and go low carb this time.

Don't worry about the 471 this morning, to be expected what with all the sugar and gravy he ate. Don't feed anymore gravy or sugar, just give him the low carb foods and let's see how he does today/tomorrow.

Now that the crisis over, when you feel better, how about starting a spreadsheet, so we can all better help you going forward.

    And good job last night.......

Given that Simon dropped to 58 at +2.5 and had to supplement with HC, there is a good chance he would have dropped below 50. That would mean a dose decrease to 0.75IU. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?
