i had a feeling i need to start testing him mid-day again, but the condition of his ear is still pretty bad

Can you switch ears? I used to use one for about 5 to 7 days, and then switch to the other for a bit. One usually bled better than the other, but I felt alternating gave them a break. I also used the Neosporin with Pain Relief cream, and put just a teeny dab over the poke holes. It really does work. I've used it on my own wounds before.
