Yesterday's condo

Still trying to wrap my head around everything that happened yesterday. A huge thank you to everyone for their advice. I started reading Tanya's CRF page last night and felt totally overwhelmed by all the information. However, the one good piece of news seems to be that we caught this very early and that Capone's Phosphorus and BUN levels are (still) in normal range.

Even more importantly, he's feeling great. He has always had a good appetite and he didn't even miss a meal after his dental and all of his extractions yesterday. I am very relieved about that! I'll do some more reading today...

Walter got yet another dosecrease this morning after a particularly bad AMPS and very little evidence that he made it into better levels on 1.5 U. He seems to be feeling fine though... even now that the kits are loose in the house.

The bean, on the other hand, got very little sleep. Not only do the babies think that the idea of personal space is highly overrated and doesn't apply to them, but their batteries recharge awfully fast. Nothing like getting woken up by a kitten stampede. Or a kitten that is trying to sleep on your face.

Tanya's can be overwhelming just like fd was for me! One step at a time. The way I approached it was to read just the parts that applied to my cat. For you it would be anything applying to stage l. At this point all you really need is to feed a lower phosphorus food. Keep an eye on excessive drinking and urinating. I know others here say to start fluids now but I just found a thread written by a vet I trust who said the use of fluids is to keep them well hydrated and he doesn't believe most cats need them on a regular basis as they can self hydrate with food and water. Read what is written on tanya's about it and talk to your vet. Most cats don't need fluids until around 3.5 but some need them before and some later. The goal is to keep them well hydrated. Water works just as well as long as they are drinking. I suspect your cat is hydrated as you didn't see symptoms. A urinalysis will let you know how well he is concentrating his urine which is another clue. Check the gums to see if slick or pasty. I'll get off my soapbox now. You have caught this early so while unsettling I wouldn't be overly worried. :bighug:

Sorry to hear about Capones Labs:bighug::bighug::bighug:
BFG's labs are also indicative of early stage II kidney disease.
He is asymptomatic at the moment, at his last labs BUN and Creatine were up, phosphorus normal, specific gravity low, but his SDMA was normal, we haven't been able to check his BP vet hasn't got equipment for it. We'll be redoing his labs shortly.

At the moment we're adding extra water to his food, raising his bowl, and feeding LC food that is below 1% Phosphorus. Fortunately we have a few really good quality canned foods available here that are FD friendly, I think they are all made in Germany (except for one), I don't think they are available in the US, but I'll give you the names, just in case you can figure out a way of getting them
Terra Faelis
Granata Pet Symphonie
Thrive (UK)
Feringa
They are on the UK list with the analysis they vary from 0.65-.9% P

I love the photos yesterday of Capone and Iris, I just want to snuggle them both, Capone seems like such a gentle soul.
How's little Flora doing?

LOL on the kitty stampede:joyful::joyful:

We have a blue pre-shot! :joyful: First one in three weeks! Very excited for Walt! And when I laid down for a nap earlier today, he decided that it would be worth it to wade through the pesky kits to snuggle with me. :cat: So I think he is finally starting to get used to them a bit more.

Yes, Capone is the very best! He loves kittens and is just sweet and gentle and nurturing. I am just so glad that he seems to be feeling just fine. Unfortunately, Flora is still lethargic and not eating much. Even though she has almost liquid diarrhea, her fecal was negative for parasite, giardia and coccidia. We are still waiting for the results for the cryptospiridium. She got more fluids tonight and came home with a better appetite. She has been extra sweet and cuddly and likes to be held like a baby.

My vet actually called earlier today to check on Capone and see how he is doing and to reassure me about his prognosis. So, at this point, I will figure out a better food option that is low-carb and low-phosphorus. I have also ordered a new fountain to encourage him to drink more (the last one succumbed to excessive amounts of dog slobber). We will recheck his blood and check his urine in about a month and check his BP. I feel a little better now that we at least have a plan... and that way, I will have some time to do more reading too.

And it looks like we are in for some severe weather tonight. I already have carriers lined up just in case we need to evacuate into the basement. :nailbiting:

Thankfully, no tornadoes - but lots of rain, hail and wind. My power went out about 5 minutes into the storm. The entire neighborhood is dark and I haven't even tried to go outside yet to assess the damage. Most importantly, my animals are all fine. And my trees are still standing.

I just hope that the power comes back fairly soon. It's supposed to get really hot this weekend.

Christina, I'm so sorry to hear about Capone. I know you'll get lots of good advice from the others so I'll just send hugs. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

I'm glad there were no tornadoes. Hopefully the power comes back soon and the animals didn't get too scared during the storms.
