    HI All,
Cosmo has been doing really well lately, except for that ugly thing on his paw. Last night, he explored the house a bit, sat on my lap, and eventually, in the baby sling.

This morning, I was woken by a pitiful loud mewling that he does sometimes when he's stressed or needs to barf. But this time, his tongue was out of his mouth and it looked like he was panting. Drool was dripping. He moved to lay in the middle of the floor, still kind of panting.

I threw on some clothes and took him into the ER. Which is where he is now. The ER vettybean (a new one) recommended leaving him for the day. They've drawn blood, and then will do a Xray of the chest. Maybe an ultrasound to see if the ascites has changed?

The vet had me 'code' him. Yellow for life saving procedures and a call, or Red for DNR. Of course I opted for yellow. The hospital isn't sure if Dr B will be in today or not. According to his USUAL schedule, he'll be in the afternoon but according to the computer, he's not in today. I hope he goes in.

So... no idea what's going on with the respiratory distress. Except I know it's not a good sign. If you have a spare moment, please send some snowflakes and white light our way.

Here's a pic of us from a couple nights ago. It's been hot hot hot in Boston, and so he's limited his lap-sitting time. But far be it from him to relinquish all contact with his mommy.

    MUST. TOUCH. THE. MOMMY.

Thanks everyone. I'll keep you updated when news comes in.

Oh Cyncyn -- You have all of our snowflakes.
I need to go find the word for what Noisy had when he went into respiratory distress -- I think it was called a vagal (sp?) response. I'll go look right now.

ETA: I found this in Noisy's SS
Respiratory distress, ER, Dr. thinks possible "vagal response."

    Thanks everyone.

I dunno if it is dissertation distress/anxiety or what, but i'm very emotional. Maybe b/c it is respiratory and not just a thing on his paw or a bronzed poop extraction. The practically hysterical woman in the lobby who brought in her dog (who I think passed overnight) didn't help.

Vagal response sounds familiar. I thought that's when they barf b/c they're constipated?

    (((((((((((Cosmo)))))))))))))))))

I'm going through Noisy's condo that day right now, looking for JoJo posts -- I know she helped me on the phone that day.
I believe a vagal response can occur from a few reasons, still looking.

I'm putting this out here not cause I think that is what is going on but maybe?

    JoJo post to Noise: http://www.felinediabetes.com/phorum5/r ... 277,page=2
the onco believes it was a vagal response from vomiting.
i'm not 100% convinced that is what happened, could be, but the time frame seems too long to me that he was down. dunno, maybe cause of his age, debilitated condition and the stress of chemo his recovery from such an event was prolonged?
he also seemed to snap out of it after passing gas in car on the drive to SP, maybe he had intense gas pains? again dunno, just throwing things out there.

did google the new med he was given today to see if it could be a rare side effect and there is some mention of dyspnea and bradycardia.
says the effect happens pretty quick after IV administration, but noisy was given it SQ...how long after that did the event start?

well in any case, he is out of the O2 cage, recovered, and going home. food is not going to be offered unless he asks for it for rest of day and he will rest.

scary episode, which i hope doesn't happen again.

ps. we also talked about on phone that when a cat is down with respiratory issues that you don't go to your reg vet, but the closest vet hospital just so everyone has that tidbit in mind.

    glad he is coming home!
going BTB. call me if ya need. if no, will be back on after PT later and see how he is doing.

I found this in thread too:
"Vagal nerve connects between the brain and the stomach, vomiting can push against the nerve( ?) causing a respiratory distress event. "

    Re: 6/30: Cosmo update:

    He's home. Sorry I couldn't update earlier.

I got an email from the vet at about... 5pm (2.5 hrs ago) and basically... after all those diagnostics (xray, ultrasound of abdomen, aspirate of ascites, etc) they don't know why he was panting. She said that he stopped panting at about 9am this morning (in fact, may not have done any panting at the hospital at all) and that maybe it is a blood clot. The x rays show some... decreased blood flow to the lungs, (but really, dunno if that's abnormal for him).

He wanted OUT of the carrier on the way home, which was mighty heartening for me. He's eating right now. he's got a shaved back right leg, two poodle front paws (I assume these were for the catheters) and a shaved belleh from the US.

She (not Dr B. he didn't go in today, but I think she spoke with him on the phone) recommended that I leave him there, but honestly everyone? I know he's miserable at the hospital. So I brought him home. And he's doing great. :D

THANKS TO ALL OF YOU FOR YOUR THOUGHTS AND WELL WISHES. I know they made a difference to me, and to him. The magic of this place never ceases to amaze me!

Now... the hard part is that I'm out of town for the next week. From Friday to Monday, then Wed to Monday. Say what you want to say about Cosmo, but he's got impeccable timing. Bad timing, but impeccably bad.

OMG I'm so happy he's home! Please tell him not to scare the crap outta me again.
will there be any additional testing to explore the blood clot/decreased blood flow to the lungs?

Um yeah, his timing does suck.

Poodle paws rule! LOL, reminds me of Punk's dental gloves, omg so cute. Don't suppose he's in the mood for posing for paw pics, huh? You mush and squeeze him like crazy for me! I hope he will be enjoying sling time soon.

Thanks everyone. He had a big chow down, and is now sitting next to me. While i'm frustrated that we don't know what happened, why it happened, or if it'll happen again, i'm glad he's home, happy, and comfortable.

The vet that talked to me kept calling Cosmo "she". That bugged me. If you can't remember the gender of my baby, I don't really trust you to keep all of his medical details straight either. That might be small and petty, if so, fine. I'm small and petty.

Dinner time. and then lap/snuggly time for all of us.

Just reading this. I'm so glad everything seems ok.

Velcro had some similar episodes last year at this time. Nothing showed up in any tests (except fuzzy lungs in xray) and it was determined she was too hot. Was it warmer the last few days?

Well, yes. It's been hot here in Boston, but I leave the A/C on in one of the two rooms of my apt, and the other room has a window fan. The window fan room stays cooler naturally. If I know the temp will be 80 or above, I leave the A/C on low all day.

But, good thought. Who knows?!?!? A friend was just asking if it is possible he ate something he should not have done. Entirely possible.

I'm so glad that Cosmo is home and is feeling fine. Tori says "Hey Cos are you trying to copy me? I've got poodle paws and a nakkked tummy too."

I am so glad to hear that the Cosmo update is encouraging. I was adding my snowflakes even though I couldn't post earlier. (wow - and I even saw a Joan and Madison entry - haven't seen anything from Joan in ages!). When you go away - who is going to be looking after Cosmo? Someone that is familiar with HIM? (yeah, it would bug me too - the sex thing). I ask cause as often as my pet sitter has stayed here - exclusively over the last 15 months with the DM - she didn't realize the neurlogical/vestibular thingy on Tuscany in February. Hopefully it is someone that will keep a close eye on Cosmo and realize if there are any changes. Hope your time with him til you leave is good - lots of snuggles for him.

Re: 6/30: Cosmo update: snowflakes please

Hi Joyce, thx for the concern. I have a petsitter who comes 2x per day-30 min each visit. She actually used to work at angell with dr b, so if she saw anything, she'd know. I will, of course, be leaving her a detailed note.

I thought about canceling. But I told myself that I need to go.

He's going potty now. And was snuggly all evening. He got tons of kisses, and we're off to go snuggle in bed now.

Thx everyone. I don't know how to thank u all for ur concern & love for my special lemon.

So happy to read Cosmo is home. Gotta love the timing - just when you have to go away. He wants to keep you on the edge of your seat - can't let things get too quiet. These guys are always up to something. Glad to hear you have such a good petsitter. Makes all the diff when having to go away.

Glad he's home and feeling better. Maybe just his way of indicating he wants to go with you on vacation...

    Hi all,
Just a quick update before I leave for vacay (I'm gone Fri-Monday afternoon). Cosmo has been awesome since coming home. I can tell his tummy is getting bloated though, and I worry he'll have some p-itis while I"m gone.

Dr B's office contacted me to day to follow up and see if I had any questions. I emailed back and told them that I was going to be out of town, and wondered how to handle any emergency. The response from Dr B's assistant

I'm much reassured. I love how she says HE would much prefer to be involved. *I* would much prefer Dr B be involved too!!

Anyway. I don't htink i'm going to give a prophylactic dose of mirtz or anything, b/c he's been eating really well. I'll see how he is on Monday when i get back and leave instructions for the DPS. (She knows how to do injections and SQs, obviously).

again... thanks for all the support and love and vines from everyone here!!

Might want to tell DPS where the Pepsid is, just in case.

    Have a great time.

Hope you have a good R&R type of weekend. It sounds like Cosmo will be in good hands - I hope he behaves himself!
