Trey`s itch seem to be getting worst wondering if I can give him maybe a piece of Benadryl it must be allergys he always had itch because we would pet or brush him and he would always lick He kind of stopped this when the dry food was taken away. Now over the pass week he seems to be grooming a lot and very itchy Any thoughts I did a wipe down and brush and it seem to help for a bit Thanks Kath

You really should check with your vet as there are lots of reasons a cat may be itchy, including a single flea bite, other allergies, etc. The grains in dry food can absolutely be a cause of allergic reaction. Of course cats can also be allergic to beef, fish, etc.

As a short term fix, you can use some Benadryl for a cat but it is essential to use only plain benadryl (diphenahydramine), as some variants have ingredients that are dangerous to cats. The vet prescribed some benadryl for my asthmatic Mini (GA) when he periodically would start scratching over his eyes and under his ears, after ruling other various causes. Make sure you check the package carefully since it can also come in various strengths. You may need a good pill cutter, but these are pretty cheap. I tried the children's benadryl but the pills were grape flavored, and larger than the adult pills.

Dosing guidance is provided at http://www.kittens-lair.net/cat-health/household-medications-for-cats.html: Benadryl treats allergies, itching etc. 1/2mg per lb. every 8 hours (max dose 2mg per lb.)

See http://www.marvistavet.com/html/benadryl.html for lots of itchy skin info, and http://www.vetinfo.com/cat-benadryl-vomiting.html which mentions benadryl use for vomiting and travel sickness. You might also consider adding some wild salmon oil with primrose to your cat's diet to reduce inflammation and itching.

The last thing I wanted to mention is that Mini hated the test of the Benadryl and the bitterness made his mouth foam. Putting it in a Pill Pocket (you can buy these at Petsmart for $6) worked really well. You can also roll the pill pocket in salmon dust; the salmon chunks are at Petsmart for $6.
