Response for what, exactly? If it's for what to do this morning, check the bottom of page 2 of your thread here. ;)

Hi Gretchen. Sorry, I was assist feeding Azalea and just finished that part of her breakfast.

With today's plan re t/f/s because of last night's late shot and unless @MrWorfMen's Mom (Linda) has modifying suggestions re Trinka's pm+6 and pm+11 readings, I'd say go ahead with Linda's plan that she indicated in her early morning post above.

That would mean to shoot 2units at 12 noon today, you'd test by 11:30, get preshot food into Trinka and then shoot the 2units (not 2.5) at noon.

Between now and 11:30 let him eat small amounts of low carb low phos and some liver shake (being sure he's not getting more than 60ml or approx 1/4 cup per day of the liver shake).

Then, don't shoot what would be tonight's dose (Skip pm shot) and resume Trinka's 4am t/f/s tomorrow morning (Sunday). I'd continue with the 2 unit dose tomorrow.

You're bringing Trinka to vet today at 1 pm for fluids and b12. I agree that it's time to get a 2-week redo of his bloodwork, the CBC panel being preferred and includes checking on his kidney function, anemia and his phos and potassium levels (that need to be monitored often bc of the supplements he's on for high phos and low potassium). Can you have those done today?

Also, cuz you mentioned that Trinka's stool was "hard" yesterday, you can begin to add about 1/2 -1 tsp of canned plain pumpkin to his food, starting with that amount and 1-2x daily.

And this afternoon when you're home from the vet, maybe we can get your spreadsheet into the signature part of your profile page. I saw when I looked at your spreadsheet earlier, that you've entered early morning test results. Super!

Only thing I would add is not to feed Trinka between 09:30 am and 11:30 am this morning so the pre-shot reading is not food influenced.:)

It would be very helpful to us if you could set up your signature with a link to your spreadsheet so we can see what's been going on. Without this we have to scroll back through many posts and make our own list of injection/test times and BG numbers. Please make it as easy as possible for us to help you. I know there's a link to a spreadsheet somewhere but we shouldn't have to search for it. You have many people who want to help you and Trinka but we need this from you.

When Gretchen returns from vet this afternoon, hope can get SS link into the Gretchen's signature. She tried this morning but, and maybe it's my eyes, I didn't see it come up in her signature.

In meantime here's Trinka's SS link to save scrolling back and forth time today
(And I hope I have inserted the link correctly)

I can see it. I noticed that Gretchen's full name has appeared in the signature area of her posts. She might not want her surname there. I suspect she got that far but didn't know how to put a link to the SS into her signature.

On way home from vets. His ears are pretty beat up from all the poking. They want me to give him a break from testing and try again Tuesday

I vehemently disagree with your vet about not testing BG again until Tuesday. It is NOT safe to give insulin under any circumstances without pre-shot tests and without a few mid cycle tests it will not be possible to see how Trinka is doing on the lowered dose. The choice here is to try to help Trinka in the best way possible or skip testing and hope for the best because not testing could result in Trinka getting insulin when her BG is too low for a shot and that would be very dangerous. The choice is yours but I think if you use one meter preferably the Relion (don't retest with the EverPaw because it serves no useful purpose to test twice) as well as getting some Neosporin (Polysporin) to put on Trinka's ears to help healing, Trinka's ears should be fine and it will definitely be safer and help us help you get Trinka sorted out sooner.

    Hi Gretchen,

Thank you for testing last night (Saturday) at 8:30pm et. The 256, which was +8.5 hrs after yesterday's noontime dose of 2u, IMO was encouraging.

Did all go ok with skipping last night's shot? (so that you can resume the previous t/f/s cycle this morning.)

This is about the hour when you'd be test and feed before you resume 2u shot at ca4-4:30am.

    Please post and update.

    Hi Gretchen,
Glad you tested this morning and did 2u.

The one-time elongated 16-hour skipped shot cycle (to get back on track with the early morning/early evening t/f/s cycle) and no food from after last night's test at 8:30 and this morning might account for the 475 this morning. That said, he didn't dive as low mid-cycle after the noon 2u injection. And I see the less extreme drop at mid-cycle last night on the 2u as a good thing because extreme drops and then sudden rises, especially long term, are really hard on his system including kidneys, pancreas etc.

What we're trying to help with is to find both the right dose for Trinka's current needs, adjusting gradually as his body needs and giving his pancreas and other organs a chance to heal and balance. These all are reasons why home testing and having regular lab work done in the ways and kinds of tests suggested here are essential.

Ok and thanks for update, Gretchen.
If he seemed off on his liver shake this morning, hold off on that til you make fresh batch. Glad your hubby will spoon feed and see that he's eating. If he has concerns during the day let us know.
Also if you have some canned plain pumpkin, try to add some to his food portion, about 1/2 tsp pumpkin to start with, in case he's getting constipated.
    Can hubby test?

The mid cycle 256 is indeed encouraging and a much gentler drop that you've been seeing. Stay with the 2u for now and we'll keep monitoring it to determine next steps in the next day or two. We need to remember that the extended cycles are playing into things here too right now so patience for the moment is key.

Immediately after eating jumped down and went pee. Went to box 2 more times since then. First time pooped a small amount second time pooped a lot.

Gretchen, below is text you can copy and paste into your signature so those trying to help will have the info they need to offer ideas/suggestions pertinent to you and Trinka. I'm not sure if the link the SS will work this way or not but if not we'll fix it after you get the text in the signature.

    To do your signature:
Copy the text under the label Signature below.
Go up to the upper right hand of the page and hover over your screen name "Trinkasmommy".
A menu will drop down and you just click on "Signature".
This opens up a text box into which you can paste the text below.
Once you paste in the text, scroll down and click on the "save changes" button.

Let us know when you have done this please let us know so we can check the link for the spreadsheet.

6.00 pm 2.5 units bg was 395. Hubby fed him about 1 Tbsp Sheba and one Tbsp liver shake. Finished liver shake before insulin and immediately jumped down and peed. Pooped twice in one hour little bit first time a lot second time. Just gave him watered down Sheba with zobaline. Taking bg now before bed. 50?

Those are safe numbers, but you'll want to test again in 20-30 minutes from feeding him the Sheba

@Yong .....she said on Facebook that Trinka's eating some Sheba

50 was Relion, 102 was Everpaw

ETA...I also think you'd probably best go back down to 2...or maybe 2.25 if you think you can do that

We don't like to see them going quite that low on Novolin

If fireworks scare them, most cats numbers will go higher due to the stress, but occasionally a cat will react to stress by going low

That's a much safer number and in the right direction.......don't feed any more right now and test again in 30 minutes to make sure he stays up

Gretchen, please lower the dose to 2u as of tomorrow morning and continue the 2u until we can see how it is working for Trinka. You need to avoid having Trinka get down to such low numbers when using Novolin and especially right now when you are still having to help feed her. It is extremely dangerous to have her BG dropping that low.

I would also encourage you to pick one meter and stick with it. It is confusing for everyone when meter readings from both a human meter and a pet meter are in play particularly when BG is low and there is some urgency to understanding what is going on.

    Ok thank you Gretchen.
I hope your vet will appreciate that 2.5u has been too much for Trinka. And that you will try what Linda (@MrWorfMen's Mom) and Chris (@Chris & China ) have urged above about doing the lower dose for the next few days and continued monitoring.

I'm glad you tested early at pm +4 last night, checked in here and fed and retested. Had you waited to test later in mid cycle, Trinka's numbers could have dropped further and might not have been able to come back up enough with food to be safe.

Well obviously we got no mid cycle today and then that horrific black pre-shot tonight. Wonder if that is indicative of yet another significant drop/bounce or lack of food/carbs through the day. Too many unanswered questions! I hate black pre-shots....they are not a good omen. :(

Good morning Gretchen. Thanks for updating about Trinka. Heartened to see that Trinka's am bg is lower and looks to be stabilizing after last night.

The extremely high pm preshot last night, as Linda described, might have been bc of bounce with not enough food during day to help counter a bg drop during the day.

I know it can be hard to be sure he's got enough food in him on days when both you and hubby's work schedules mean that neither of you are home to be sure Trinka eating enough.

    How is Trinka this morning?

Has Trinka had nosebleeds before? Was the bleeding bright or dark red?How is his breathing, congestion? How is his behavior this morning?

Sending vines for a feel better day.

Gretchen, if you can, it would be helpful to get a reading at +4 or +5 instead of +6 for today and tomorrow's cycles to see how early/fast Trinka is dropping. He dropped a lot last night and that lower pre-shot this morning was nice but a bit unexpected. I am wondering if the dose is too high in relation to the amount of food Trinka is taking in. Until he will eat enough on his own, it's important to make sure he is not dropping too much especially when he is on his own and you can't ensure he's getting any nutrition during the peak drop in the cycle.

Gretchen, I think that test is around +4. and Trinka is very low, still safe now but may drop further. That reading was on the Relion meter, correct? I would suggest you either rub some honey on Trinka's gums or add some honey to the liver shake if Trinka will take it that way. We need to make sure she doesn't go any lower. Please do this and then get another test of BG in about 20 minutes.

    Relion meter. How about nutrical?

You need something with a high sugar content to push the BG up quickly and I doubt Nutrical would have that much sugar in it but I'm not familiar with the ingredients. I'd stick with honey, karo syrup or maple syrup as they are very concentrated sugar content and will work quickly to bring BG up.

Just checked the Nutri-Cal. Since it has some corn syrup in it, it may help push BG up but I'd still rub some syrup or honey on Trinka's gums for a quick boost. Then if Trinka will take some Nutri-Cal, give him a bit. We don't want to fill him up with a lot of stuff to the point where he won't eat or drink anything in the next few hours because he's full.

That's fine. It's not needed right now but you may want to pick some up for future use just to ensure you can get enough calories into Trinka.

Gretchen, did you rub honey on Trinka's gums? I suggest you do so again immediately or get him to lick some honey off a spoon. Trinka is teetering on the edge of safe now and we can't let his numbers drop any further. Give honey or karo and test again in 15 minutes., If BG has not come up or stayed steady by then, you may need to take Trinka to the vet to get his BG up and keep him safe.

Just saw your last post. That's good that he is eating but we need to be careful not to fill him up with stuff right now because you are going to have to keep his BG up for a few hours and he may need to eat more through that period of time. Please give him some honey or karo and just a bit of the Sheba if he's already had the liver shake. Do you have any food with gravy on it?

The 51 now is far too low and we need to get that up ASAP. Please test again in 20 minutes after some honey or karo is either rubbed on his gums or he takes some off a spoon.

Gretchen, If you were saying you didn't have karo, honey, or syrup can you ask a neighbor? In a pinch I think you can mix some white sugar with warm water to a syrup consistency. We don't want him going any lower, especially with his eating difficulties.

@Yong will you be around to keep an eye on things here later today? I am going out later this afternoon and will not be available until very late tonight or possibly tomorrow morning and I think we need to seriousy reconsider the 2u dose at this point. I suspect Trinka might have dropped very low last night too so he's going to be more insulin sensitive now. I'm thinking dropping the dose to 1u tonight if pre-shot is high enough. Thoughts?

I should be around for a couple hours to check in. Yes, I was just thinking about dose to either 1.0 or 1.25U depending on his PS.

Just seeing these recent updates. I will update thread title to reflect today's and add 911

Gretchen, yes bg far too low for him. In addition to the nutri-cal and getting some Karo or honey from neighbors: Do you have some maple syrup? If so try that in same way would do the honey etc. try not to load him up with too much food all at once. Needs the protein gradually to help offset the fast action of syrup stuff.

Gretchen, please re-test his BG NOW and let us know if you've managed to get honey/syrup/karo from a neighbour. Trinka needs your help and you can't let his BG go any lower. Please note any behaviour changes as well.

The stool is a concern but right now the BG needs to be the focus. Have you retested again yet? If not please do so now. It is vital to get Trinka's BG up and keep it up.

Wonderful to see the BG up now. Don't give any more food or other sweet stuff and check BG again in 30 minutes. We need to see if Trinka can hold the BG up there on his own without any more food/carb influence added.

The nosebleed is concerning. Is this happening when Trinka sneezes or spontaneously? How long till it stopped bleeding? You could try an ice pack on his muzzle but I doubt he'd tolerate it well.

The next time you go to the store, I would buy a few cans of wet food with gravy in it, and some syrup or honey, and stash them in a separate corner of your pantry along with a printed out copy of the hypo instructions for the times when you need it. You don't want to be stuck in the middle of the night needing them immediately.

Maybe because he was straining to poop? Just an idea. Noticed it after he used the litter box

Is he still on antibiotics for the URI or are they finished? This is something you need to take up with the vet. It could just be dried out nasal passages but better to have the vet check especially if he is still sneezing. I don't think straining to poop should make his nose bleed. Maybe the URI didn't get completely dealt with by the antibiotics.

Ok thank you gretchen. Good that Trinka's bg up.

Til others weigh in here, I'll note:
It's fast rise bc of the sugary stuff so you need to give him some food, little bits at a time to stabilize the fast drop from the syrup. You need to keep rechecking his bg at time intervals Linda and others suggest. Keep the syrup or nutrical handy bc you may need to periodically apply a bit to his gum if he starts to dive again into low numbers.

I'm concerned about the coinciding nosebleeds and the runny poo and ask you to be ready to bring him to vet or er should situation not stabilize within the next few hours.

Also please don't automatically dose the 2units tonight. Post here first and then wait for input.

We'll evaluate dose at this afternoon's pm bg reading and based on how he does today and what his bg is throughout the day. What Linda and/or Yong wrote about the possibility of him now being insulin-sensitive makes a whole lot of sense. He may need a lower dose than this morning's dose was.
