Whatever is going on outside your door, wherever you are, we are not going to close.
This is a place of reason, empathy and support. You will not be abandoned, shamed or ignored.
We are all volunteers, many of us have had multiple diabetic cats and still more have been here for many years. We all started somewhere, me with my mouth hanging open in my vet's office, "You want me to do what? Poke holes in my cat and buy a magic meter while my cat just sits there?" "Why is this happening to me?"
We get new members every day and your questions won't always be answered right away. You can look for your post five minutes after asking a question and it has sunk off the bottom of the screen, under the table and down the air vent. Do NOT lose faith in us. I for example cannot give you medical advice but I patrol the New Posts sector looking for members who have received zero replies. If you see the word "bump" under your question don't worry about what that means, just know someone has cared enough to push you back above water.
In the short term don't worry about a shortage of magic beans diabetic food, it doesn't exist. Many of us feed our diabetic cats Fancy Feast cat food, something that looked like pig slop to me until I understood what my cat really needed. Available at finer stores everywhere, and Walmart too!
Diabetes can be complicated but it's not a death sentence.
And lastly you'll have to get over the "don't listen to the internet weirdos" thing you've heard about your entire life. You are home now.

Also, please feel comfortable asking any questions you may have. Most likely there is someone on this site who has already had the same questions and can help you. Our purpose to help you learn how to give the best care to your cats and manage their diabetes so you may have many more years together.

Yes, there is no such thing a stupid question here. And we also accept words like poo, poop and whiz but not American Express.
Cry if you want to, we all have. Just don't tear out your hair.

Some of you may feel resistance between what you hear here and what your vet thinks is appropriate. Sadly feline diabetes is technically rare so it's not taught well in veterinarian colleges. There is no standard dose of insulin although it's okay for you vet to suggest a starting dose but this must be done using a blood glucose meter.
Okay, the point of this is to make you feel safe here so bombarding you with details on caring for your cat will come later.
There is a well worn cliché here, no two cats are the same. That is an absolute truth. N2C
Finally, years ago my wife and I hovered over our first of two diabetic cats. "Oh my God, he's dead!" "No, I saw him move". We were frantic until my wife came across this.
We call it the Dear Mom letter and it should be required reading.

Thank you for saying it's ok to cry, but that's exactly what I've been doing...and I am NOT crier. I just found out today my companion, my baby, my boy has diabetes. I am overwhelmed and scared, but my adopted mother-in-law (my sister in law's mother) directed me to this site and it has been a great help. I look forward to asking questions and learning from the group.

We all cried. I've done this twice and after a bit it was no more than an interruption in my daily life which consisted of doing nothing anyways. I got lucky with two low maintenance boys, I wish you that same luck. :bighug: :coffee:

Hey everyone, I am brand new here. My 14-year old girl just got diagnosed with diabetes two days ago, and I started giving insulin injections yesterday. Thankfully my roommate is a nurse and has helped me through my first couple of injections. Her dose is fairly small, I think - 1 unit twice per day. So far, so good. She's pretty low maintenance and very chill.

Thanks to everyone in this thread for their kind and welcoming words.
