I have been learning all that I can about renal failure in dogs and cats. I have a question for anyone who has experience.

What have you found to be the best food to feed a dog with CRF?
    and
What have you found to be the best food to feed a cat who is diabetic but also has CRF?

I appreciate all the imput that anyone has.

The phosphorus content needs to be as low as reasonably possible.

For cats, Feline CRF has lots of info on managing the condition. Also, Cat Info has phosphorus levels listed on the food chart and Dr Pierson suggests you not go to a low protein diet in early stages due to subsequent loss of muscle mass, which further debilitates the animal.

Fresh water daily, possibly in a fountain, will provide the extra water needed for less effecient kidneys to flush out toxins. Monitor water consumption as an indicator of increasing severity of renal failure and check for dehydration daily (see my signature link Secondary Monitoring Tools - those work for both dogs and cats).
