Another Alphatrak/glucometer issue

I have been using an Alphatrak2 on Izzy since he was diagnosed in January (now in remission). My vet prefers it (and directed me to mail order) and the blood take is minute. I have a couple of the units and had been alternating. Lately I notice Izzy is nearer the top end of normal range more often than not. Both units are coded properly (37), both tested with the same control solution. Last week Izzie popped up to a 176 reading. He hadn't seen my vet in a few months so I brought him in (he was acting punk as well). His BS was in the 130s, a couple of hours after eating? All of his other numbers were in normal range.

I normally test every 5 days or so. I pushed up the schedule and noticed that the two glucometer a were off by quite a bit. Oddly if I switched the vials of strips, the numbers became close.
Today unit 1 w/vial 1 ..67, unit 2 w/vial 2 ..101. Reverse the identically coded vials the units read 119 and 123, respectively. As a reference point, a Bayer Contour yielded a reading of 89.

When I called Zoetis, all they wanted was to talk with my vets office. I wanted to send in my two units and let them sort it out. The conversation degenerated from there. In order to monitor Izzie accuracy and reliable results are most important. While I like the Alphatrak more than the Contour, the randomness bothers me.

That's my whine for the day. There are far more serious threads here, I know. But there is potential for trouble here.

I know what you mean. When I checked my AT2 meter against my vet's lab equipment results, the AT2 was 80 points higher than the lab equipment. When I called Zoetis about this, they asked me if I knew that all glucometers were allowed a 20% + or - variance and I replied yes, but this was a 35% variance. Then they started asking me how I stored the strips, etc. and tried to make it my fault. Then they wanted my vet to call them, etc. and he laughed at that and said that if it would make a difference that he would call but it would not. Zoetis doesn't really care if their meters are accurate or not. They just want to advertise that they are within 5% of the vet readings, etc. And that may be true if one's vet uses a glucometer to check the pet's blood glucose, but mine uses real lab equipment, not a hand held glucometer. It's a rip off.

I had the same discussion yesterday when I first noticed the issue. Yesterday Izzy was 151 on one AT2 and 92 on the other. I was informed that as a prescription device, they wanted to talk with my Vet. I refused, the conversation quickly fell apart...
I just ordered the animal centric glucometer from Advocate. The kit was free, I paid 6.95 for shipping. I'll stick with the lancets for the AT2.

I have tested Dres blood from vet blood draw and it is always ether spot on or within 5--
I think I have been lucky--
I sometimes use freestyle strips with AT unless I know we are approaching more critical numbers...
If we end up long term I will probably switch to a human meter.
It odes get very pricey but I am a it anal

I have also tested my AT2 against the vets lab machine several times and had only about a 5% difference.

I suspect that one of my AT2s is accurate. Both may be. I just don't understand how one vial coded 37 can yield a number 54 points lower with the same spot of blood then a second vial with the same 37 code. Luckily I'm only monitoring Izzy, not basing treatment on those numbers. Probably I'm more upset with Zoetis. The false narrative that these need be prescription devices, and as such they only will deal with my vets office, puts my cat at risk. Oh well, I'll still eventually buy another two AT2s (buying new starter kits is close to the same price as buying just the supplies). Izzy will still get monitored. And I hope he remains in remission.

I hope Izzy remains in remission as well!
