    Hey everyone,

Haven't been online since Ninja has been diet controlled. She is eating only lamb, salmon and chicken Encore Pate Cat food which is 0 carb. And Thrive cat treats. She doesn't need insulin anymore. However I think she may be getting bored of these foods, so I've been searching for some others to order. and these came up from the Happy Kitty Company. Ropocat, Maccs, Omnomnom, Granata.

I emailed them to ask how much carbs are in their food but I don't really understand the nutritional info they sent me. Can anyone decipher it?

Also I don't know how serious it is for her to have no carbs whatsoever. I don't want to start feeding her low carb and watch her numbers go up again. So it's best to stay completely 0 carb yes? Until now it has kept her completely uneeded of her insulin for months.

This link, Canned cat food for EUROPEANS and INTERNATIONAL buyers has a lot of information of some of those foods you mention. Dr. Schroedinger put together a list and linked it into her signature.

I think you will find most of your answers in that post. It's in the Feline Health forum.

    Hi Marie,

I'm so glad Ninja is doing well.

There are very few zero carb foods. But there are probably some on Juliet's list (which I think Deb gave the link to?)
All the ones you've listed are considered very low carb (with the exception of the Macs varieties that contain rice (The grain-free version of Macs is just fine)).

It may be that Ninja can tolerate more carbs in her diet without her blood glucose levels rising (depending on how carb sensitive she is).
You could also add some plain meat to the new foods to further reduce their carb content. (I understand that up to 20% of the diet can be plain meat as long as the rest of the diet is nutritionally complete).

The carb issue aside, it is also the case that the foods you've listed here have better quality ingredients than the Encore pates. So, that might be another reason to try introducing new foods. (There's nothing wrong with the Encore pates per se, it's just that the other foods are better...if you see what I mean.) If I were feeding my cats just Encore pates long term then I'd probably consider adding a little extra taurine to their diets just to make sure they were getting enough; either in the form of taurine powder (diluted in water first), or by adding chopped heart meat. But that's just me....

If you really do want to continue to feed Ninja 0% carb food then another option would be to feed her homemade raw food. It's not quite as hard as it sounds as it's possible to buy minced whole meats and then add supplements to them to make them into complete foods. There are complete raw cat foods available but, sadly, none of the ones I know of are zero carb...

The only way to know if Ninja's blood glucose is affected by the newer foods is by testing her. Do you still have viable test strips?

ok if they are safe enough to try, it has been months since she needed insulin, and she only needed it for about a month to begin with.
I will get a few try them and test her after she's eaten.
I didn't know the encore was low in taurine, that's very good to know since she's so old she must need it even more!
I'll check my diary and see if i can make it :p i know i've got a few bike trips coming up on the weekends (motorbike)

    Hi Marie,

I don't know that the Encore is low in taurine. It's just hard to tell from the ingredients list what is actually in the can; and taurine is easily destroyed during meat processing. So, if I was feeding only this food long term I'd be tempted to supplement. I understand that taurine is OK to supplement because any excess is excreted easily.
I'm sure there are other folks who wouldn't consider supplementation necessary. I'm just geeky that way!

    So, you're in Sutton now?
    Hey, we're almost neighbours!
Hang on, is that your motorbike I can hear whizzing by....?! ;-)
