Just heard from the vet: Sunshine is in the beginning stages of renal failure. She suggested Royal Canin Renal LP or Hills k/d. Do not like the quality of either of these brands. Can anyone suggest an alternative?

You do not need prescription food for the earlier stages of renal failure. They are high in carbs and low in protein and not good for diabetic cats.
Just choose a low carb, high protein wet food with a phosphorus level of ideally 250mg/ or less
Have a look at this link of Lisa Pierson

Make sure you give lots of fluids....you can add into the food to make it soupy if your kitty will eat it.
Here is a link to a wonderful site full of information about chronic renal failure. There is lots you can do to manage it and slow the progression.
