    Hi Everyone,

I am CONSTANTLY thinking about animal food around here and now that Basil is OTJ for a few weeks, I feel as if maybe I can begin to plan some food changes.

Right now, he eats FF and Merrick, 6% carbs or below and generally 4% and below.

    My questions:

    1) Is it really okay to feed 10% carbs? That opens up a lot of other flavors.

    2) Is anyone familiar with Prowl from Honest Kitchen? It is a dehydrated raw. I feed my dog two of their products--Force and Thrive. He LOVES LOVES it. Stands there and licks that dish like you wold not believe. Here is the link to the nutritional profile for Prowl, the cat formula. (Carbs are on second page.) Is 9.5% carbs on an "as fed" basis a good number? They also give the "dry matter basis." All thoughts appreciated, particularly the Food Queen, Janet, if she is around. :)

    Thanks!

ETA: If he keeps being so fussy (like turning his nose up at Cowboy Cookout and FF Turkey and Giblets) I might try mixing those with a higher carb food to get a decent average. Like if he ate a serving of half 5% and half 9% he'd be at 7%.

Um, I just did the calculation a la Janet's charts and I got 27% protein, 57% fat and 16% carbsm so Never mind the Prowl!

Still wondering about that 10% carb feeding. Is it really okay or is it better to stay lower?

It is but do keep an eye on bgs. Some cats do better with as few carbs as possible.

Ingredients: Free-range chicken, eggs, potatoes, yams, organic flaxseed, zucchini, spinach, cranberries, rosemary, vitamins and minerals.

The potatos may raise bgs but ECID.

I don't know of any other dehydrated similar food you can feed. For regular freeze dried RAW patties. Nature's Variety freeze dried RAW is one but I don't know if that is affected by the recall or not. My cat loved Stella and Chewy's http://stellaandchewys.com/ but only the beef and lamb ones for dogs  He wouldn't eat the one for cats (chicken/beef, I think). I only fed him a patty once in awhile so it was fine.

Something else my cat loved was Feline Future pre-mix with cooked chicken. http://www.felinefuture.com/ Technically it's supposed to be used with raw meat but my cat wouldn't eat raw so I had to use cooked meat following the recipie on the the Feline Future web site. Free sample for US residents: http://www.felinefuture.com/?p=1031

Might be something to look into if your cat likes variety in the diet
