I have a diabetic cat. I was told by my Vet to give six units of Lantus twice a day and feed a can and a half of fancy feast seafood feast classic pate’ inwas getting glucose readings of 189-259 my Vet said in an attempt to get his glucose readings lower I should switch to royal canon prescription diabetic moist food... and lower insulin to four units twice a day.. Instarted getting glucose readings of 450 or higher so my Vet up’ed the insulin to 5 units twice a day... upon which I started getting glucose readings between 350 and higher.. not to mention ever sense switching to the prescription royal canon diabetic food his appetite has sky rocketed to the point he’s tried to eat a leaf of lettuce, corner of American cheese, a peace of stake, and chicken and this morning I found him eating a stick of butter someone left on the table... the specialist my cat see’s is off on fridays and his regular local Vetrinarian won’t change the insulin dosage without talking to the specialist on Monday.. my cat is yawling like he’s being starved.. and I don’t know what to do.. I thought about comparing the seafood feast pate’ to the prescription royal canon moist cat food tonsee what’s caused his glucose to rise and appetite to increase so drastically but I don’t know what I’m looking for in the foods to compare. Does anyone here know, or have any ideas.

Hi Rachel, welcome. As far as food goes, if he was doing well on the Fancy Feast, go back to that. Also try feeding him multiple times a day. It sounds like you are home testing, if so if you set up our spreadsheet, we can see what’s going on. Your kitty is at a rather high dose. How long since he was diagnosed? Please come to the Main Health forum and tell us more about him. Here are the spreadsheet instructions, if you need help, just ask

Holy cow that is A HUGE dose. Most cats never need more than 3 units. Can you upload a copy of your log of readings? Sometimes too much insulin can look like not enough. This dose has me concerned.

even three units was way too high for my kitty which lead to tragic results....not to alarm you...just needed to give you a strong warning...
