    Hello -
My name is Amy and I have a very sweet 14yr old boy who was newly rx'd with diabetes. He received his rx last Wednesday and we started a 1 unit AM - 1 unit PM ProZinc schedule per our vet's instructions. Our boy must have been too sick or not getting the right dose b/c by Sunday he needed emergency vet care for 3 nights, DKA, they treated him with fluids and meds and got him acting like himself again. He is home now with us and his ProZinc has been adjusted to 2 units AM - 2 Units PM. He is eating again, less water drinking, much less of a food maniac (begging for food 24-7).
I am now a worry wort.
Is he eating enough, is he laying around too much
    Is he getting sick again
He is not back to his normal behavior, although he is nothing like he was Sunday.
I do have an appointment next week with an internal med cat diabetes vet to keep finding good adjustments for him to be healthy.

How much should I worry if he's eating, not drinking as much, but sleeping/laying down a bunch?
Its the sleeping/laying down a lot that has me worried.

    Thank you for your help,
    Amy

He's also so skinny, what is the correct food amount? He eats wet food, always has. Merrick chicken pate and Tiki cat Chicken

Hi and welcome Amy. You have certainly had some challenges with your kitty and I'm sorry to read that. I'm glad he's home and you are looking for information and advice going forward with his treatment.
I think it would be a good idea to take these questions and concerns to the Main Health forum to get more eyes on these issues and get some answers to your questions. If you like, just copy and paste your intro message here to a new thread there: MAIN FORUM Be sure to add in what food he is getting, and how much.
There are members here with experience on DKA recovery and can certainly offer insights and suggestions. You may also want to create a signature that is going to provide your cat's pertinent information with each of your posts. It saves members asking the same questions or trying to go back through previous posts to find the information. Here is a link on how to do that: SIGNATURE
You don't mention if you are home testing kitty's blood sugar level so you can see how the insulin is working and to help prevent hypos. We can certainly help with that and will do so in response to your post in the Main forum.
Wishing you the absolute best with helping kitty feel better and your learning to effectively care for him and treat the diabetes. :cat:
We all started out feeling pretty scared and unsure, there is a wealth of information here, plus a terrific support system.

Yes that is Honey, short for Honeybun : ) she was outside and pregnant and flea ridden with FIV when my friend rescued her.. I had lost my old kitty of 22 years not long before and was not sure I wanted another one, never thought I could love another kitty as much as my first. When I saw Honey I knew she needed to stay with me, we found homes for her kittens and I could not have asked for a sweeter little girl.

Hope your Dice is bouncing back from his scare and you get some good advice from the new vet. I am a worry wort too. I worried before the cat was diabetic. This group is great. Hang in there girl!

She’s beautiful and so thankful to have found a friend in you. So many of our furry friends out in the world are in hard situations, breaks my heart.

22 years with a prior pal wow! That kitty was well loved :)

I honestly have a real problem with loving all animals way too much. You can always find me at a human party with our furry friends.

Dice is feeling better. We’ve seen glimpses of our boy. He goes to a internal Med doctor tomorrow, a referral from our vet.
I’m stressed to take him out of the house as the poor dudes been through so much. Thanks for the healing thoughts for him.

I have the same problem about animals. I hear about a hurt or neglected animal and it bothers me for weeks. I was crying yesterday over one members kitty that passed away and I don’t know her or her cat, I just love all kitties. I think everyone here cares a lot. I never had any kids, I plan to leave any money I have left when I die to homeless animals.

Never knew they had internal med specialists for animals, sounds promising. Good luck!
