A couple of weeks ago i decided to research online to see what exactly is happening inside of the body of a diabetic cat. i was particularly curious about the consequences of high blood sugar.

Some of this is on humans, but it seems that type 2 diabetes is similar in humans and cats. i'm not a scientist and some of this is really complex but, for most of it, you can get the idea they are trying to convey. I won't try to interpret the articles and people will need to do their own research and draw their own conclusions. I'm just sharing what i found for those who are also interested in the question of "how does this all work."

Each of the quotes below is just a glimpse at the information the article contains. The links will give you the entire article.

Kitty Bump - just because it's so important!

For any new folks, to help you put your kitty's numbers into perspective, a non-diabetic cat's BG will range from the 40's to 120ish and will mostly be under 100.

Low numbers are considered anything under 50. Hypoglycemia is lower than that, likely below 40, and would have symptoms.

I'm not advocating shoot and leave - but for people who are home-testing, who have learned when their cat's BG are lowest on the insulin, who are monitoring & know how to pull up BG using carbs, it's safe to let the cat's BG run lower.

Kidney & other organ damage begins somewhere around 200-250ish. The point where sugar is getting spilled into their urine is the point where the cat's kidneys can't process it. you can check the urine glucose to try to figure out that number for your own cat.

If you didn't already know all of that, I'd strongly encourage you to read the articles above and learn more so you can help your cat be as healthy as possible.

    Cheers!

Thank you for bumping this! I missed it previously.

I grew up with two diabetic brothers, both Type 2, diagnosed around age 8.

Brother One meticulously took care of himself, keeping a very close balance of food, exercise, rest, and insulin to maintain optimum BG levels and subsequently health. Often Brother One could go without insulin for days at a time due to this balance.

Brother Two had a very difficult time managing his BGs due to a lack of focus on diet, using insulin to counter balance indulgences. As the years went by, we watched him go blind by the age of 23 and have various body parts amputated. A toe here, a foot there, part of a leg...you get the drift. By age 30, Brother Two was on dialysis due to kidney failure. By the age of 40 he was dead.

This is why I am concerned over Poopy's blood sugars not being consistently under 250. After reading the material, I should be aiming for under 200, at minimum.

    Yes, thanks Julie!
I needed this a couple days ago and couldn't find it quick. We'll have to remember to keep bumping...

i like to bookmark topics that i might want in the future - even good condos where someone explains about things like bouncing, or urinary tract infections/inflammations, or ketones - those kind of topics that you don't need now but might want later.

at the bottom of the screen is a "bookmark topic" button. then you can see your bookmarked topics in your user control panel under "manage bookmarks."

it's also a good idea to bump topics so newer people get information.

    Me neither!

I've moved them to word document. Will be sending them to my vet for him to do some reading on.

Bump because anyone new who hasn't seen it should read it. Dr. Lisa calls glucose toxicity the "crux" of feline diabetes.
