Your cat will do best with home testing and you will save a lot of money.

Here is what you will need

    (1) For economical meters, use a human glucometer.
Our top two recommendations for meters are the Arkay (maker of the WalMart meters) available from American Diabetes Wholesale and the WalMart Relion.

At the time of writing this:

    (a) Arkray GlucoCard Vital meter kit w/ 50 test strips & lancing device: $22.99/ Refill of 100 Vital test strips: $26.99 /shipping $3.95
(b)Walmart Relion Meter Kit, no test strips included : $14.99/ test strips: 20 strips for $8.98, 50 strip for $18.98/ pickup in store or free shipping for orders over $50.

If you use links at the top of the page to order, it won't cost any more than not using them, and the FDMB will get a small commission.

    (2) Lancing devices are included in the kits and a small number of lancets. Lancets are cheap and are generally interchangeable among brands.

    (3) A rice sock makes warming the ear to increase blood flow much easier to obtain a sample and also stabilizes the ear while sampling. Take a baby sock, put in 2 tablespoons of rice, tie a knot in the end. Warm 10-15 seconds in a microwave before use. You can use a warm washcloth or paper towels if you prefer.

    (4) Treats to distract and reward your cat.
