Hello everyone! I am new to the site and the world of feline diabetes in general. My 13-year-old cat Peppin was diagnosed about a month ago.

We are currently using Lantus and I have had a very hard time getting him regulated (I am doing home glucose monitoring 4x per day). He started out with 1 or 2 unites twice per day depending on his blood sugar, and we found that his blood sugar would either be very high or very low. We recently found out he is having problems with his kidneys, so the vet suggested we try giving him 1 unit twice per day (as she thinks the kidneys have more trouble processing higher amounts of insulin). However, his blood sugar has been very high (not below 500) since we started this about one week ago. He has been on an antibiotic, Pepcid AC, and getting fluids every other day and nothing seems to be helping.

I can post more details here or over in the Lantus thread (I don't want to overdo it in the intro thread), but I wanted to introduce myself and see if anyone had any advice.

This site is great and I am looking forward to reading more and hearing from you all :)

Welcome to FDMB, the best place you never wanted to be.

There are 4 things you'll need to manage your kitty's diabetes:
    - You - without your commitment, the following won't work.
    - Low carb over the counter canned or raw diet, such as many Friskies pates. See Cat Info for more info. If already on insulin, you must be home testing before changing the diet.
    - A long-lasting insulin such as ProZinc, Lantus, BCP PZI, or Levemir.
    - And home blood glucose monitoring with an inexpensive human glucometer such as the WalMart Relion Confirm or Target Up and Up (the pet ones will break your budget!).
