    Hi all!

My Bella and I are new to the board, diagnosed about 3 months ago. The whole thing has been pretty overwhelming for me but after some scary low numbers lately I am more determined now than ever to get this girl regulated!

She is on 1.25 units of Lantus 2x/day and eats FF classics. I feed her every 6 hours but I leave the extra out that she doesn't eat at mealtime because she has always free fed. Last week, Bella was hypoglycemic and it was one of the scariest things I have experienced with a pet. She was limp and twitching and not responding to me, we got syrup on her gums and she came back within 15 minutes. I never want that to happen again.

My husband and I are widely on our own. I am having a very hard time finding a veterinarian I can rely on in my area who seems to know a lot about diabetes. The one we have always seen recommended the Lantus and seems generally knowledgeable but discourages me from home testing which is incredibly frustrating.

I am working on getting a spreadsheet started so I can do a better job of tracking her numbers. I do home test before every shot, she usually runs in the 200's-300's PS but lately we have been getting +6 numbers between 30 and 50. I am excited to get to know everyone here and learn as much as I can from you and your experience!!

Welcome Kate and Bella! The vet who diagnosed Mia made a couple of recommendations I was not comfortable with. When she recommended against home testing, that was the final straw. We have a new vet now. :)

You will get a lot of help here. Be sure to post any questions you have on the Main Health Forum.

I am no expert but those are low nadir numbers - are you sing a human or pet glucometer? Definitely need more testing but you main want to ask for a confirmation on your dose. Start a new thread and ask for dose advise. It may be a bit high for your kitty.

I would also make sure to get those pre shot numbers. She may be very low to start with.

And as for the vet - would you shoot a baby with insulin when not monitoring? So why would you inject a cat without testing.

    Love the grey cats though!

Every time the numbers go that low you need to reduce our it will continue to happen. Please read the protocol at the top of the lantus boards.

We are using a human meter - Walgreens brand.
I updated my spreadsheet with the numbers I have from the week, definitely going to do a better job getting lots of numbers for better data! Thank you!

It looks like she is going to bounce a bit from that low, that may take a 3-6 cycles to clear. Keep testing...Bella will tell you her story and then you can really start helping her out.
