Hiya. Among the other bits that are going on with Chester, he has also got hyperlipidemia :( Any thoughts or ideas?

Has the vet anything to say about the cause or treatment of this? I have no knowledge or experience here unfortunately. How is the little man feeling?

There are lots of references online and it appears to be a complication of unregulated diabetes. Very short answer re treatment is a low fat diet and insulin regulation of FD.

My cat's triglycerides were always off the chart high along with his total cholesterol also being in the higher range. I was always concerned and alarmed about it but when his diabetes went to remission and he had been off all dry food for a good while along with losing some weight his levels went way down. No one ever got very concerned about his high levels though, even the specialist. She said they don't intervene until the levels get to about 600. I don't know though what the treatment, if any, would be at that point other than diet change and regulating BG.

Thank you. :) Unfortunately his are high enough to turn his blood milky :(
Vet is just intent on stabilising him at the mo.
Spoke to the nurse this morn. They have put him onto insulin twice daily now. BG still a bit high. It was over 19 this morn. Nothing major to report at the mo.
Chessie is not a fluffy lad or had a high fat diet :( I just wondered if anyone had any experience with this. :(
They have respected my wishes to keep him off dry food . They have him on the equivalent prescription wet. I can live with that.

I'll be seeing him this avie just after ward rounds at 4.30pm. Lots more cuddles n kissies :) x

    Hi @Larry and Kitties
There's a thread about Chester and his latest challenge. Bit of a long story I'm afraid.
He's not been with me long. I don't know his levels, but it's enough for his blood to be milky in appearance :(
He is one very sick kitty at the mo - in hospital on a drip.

Feeling a bit brighter. Drip changed, onto twice daily shots, wanted to come out of cage to have a wander. Cuddled on my lap with purrs for about 10 mins then wanted off. Nearly mistook my fingers for chessie sweeties lol.
Hopefully he can stabilise enough for him to come home soon. :)

This puzzles me. The usual dosing routine for cats is twice daily insulin because they metabolize it quickly. I'm not a vet but I do wonder whether the BG control might improve with a high enough dose given twice daily. Are they still using Caninsulin? It can have a short-ish duration in some cats: only 8 to 10 hours. If given only once a day, kitty is without insulin coverage for 14 to 16 hours a day.

I'm glad he's a bit brighter. Please keep us in the loop.

Or did you mean that he was on an IV being given insulin continuously?

    @AJay
A cat's metabolism is three times that of a human; with dosing only once daily with Caninsulin, it would be almost impossible to regulate his blood glucose.

It sound very encouraging that he wants to come out to visit and to wander! Sending more prayers and healing vines.

Hiya Kris. He was on hourly insulin at one point from what I gather.
He's been on a drip permanently since he's been in.
He's still on Caninsulin. I'm guessing they are just trying to get control of what's going on- and he has s lot going on right now :( They are trying to get his BG down from hovering round the 19/20+ mark :(

I understand. Poor little guy. When my kitty had a bout of DKA he was getting doses of R insulin (fast-acting insulin) periodically to get his BG down. maybe on top of a basal insulin (longer acting). I'm sure the vet is doing whatever can be done in a complicated situation. Fingers crossed ... :bighug::bighug:

I'm seeing Chessie in about a half hour :)
Vet phoned me earlier to update me. She is happy with his progress. His BG is still high but he is stable. Eating like a very hungry Lion
She's reasonably sure he can come home very soon :)
