So purina is not going to make the special diet pates anymore. Has anyone a recommendation for what to buy now?

Here's a chart of foods broken down by carbs and phosphorus. You may just have to do some experimenting to see what your cat will eat.

The other option would be to use a phosphorus binder. They're not expensive and then you could feed foods that are higher phosphorus but generally we don't use the binders until their levels reach a certain point. (since I don't know what kind of shape your cat's kidney's are in, I can't comment further)

Here's some information on phosphorus binders as well as a lot of other great info on CKD in general

The 3oz cans are so much more expensive is the only reason I haven't.

if you feed a higher quality food like EVO or Wellness, they have a higher fat content so you feed less food less often. Yes, the cans cost more, but you end up feeding less. I prefer the ingredients in those vs Friskies or FF.

I get Friskies Pate from Costco. 48 cans for $25. 10% carbs.

Wet food is the better choice because of its moisture content.

I am new to this forum, and I have a question on canned cat food.
My 13 year old cat was diagnosed with diabetes in April. I am holding off of insulin shots in hopes of controlling it through food. His diagnosis is not critical as far as immediate need for insulin. I amin the prprocess of figuring out how to home test for glucose. In terms mean time I have switched him over from Soulistic cat food from Petco to 95% Evo canned cat food, chicken and turkey. The fat content, I noticed is high. For those of you who feed this cat food, how has your diabetic kitty been doing on this

Any thoughts on Authority® Pate Adult Cat Food at Pet smart. It's on the List of food on 8% carbs but it has Brewer's Rice in the ingredients...is this safe guys?

I used that until I found the Friskies Pate which was a lot cheaper, but everything I read on the Authority Pate brand was good news. From what I understand you generally want something under 10% to be ideal.

The dose makes the poison. If the percent of calories from carbohydrate is under 10%, it may be fine. Some cats will react to specific grains more extremely, so you monitor to check for impact to see if it'll be OK.
A change in food, particularly to one that might be more 'tasty' may encourage binging which could spike the glucose too.

Hard life for these guys. Can't eat the good stuff, get poked and prodded every day, etc. I guess they have the upside of being able to sleep all day though.

    The question is answered above.
The amount (dose) of rice in there is trivial.
Some cats will react more extremely to rice than others. You won't know until you try it.

I would say yes it's good bet to use the Authority pate brand.
