Hello it has been awhile since I have posted. My 14 year old cat Wylie was one of the lucky ones OTJ for 1 1/2 years. He has only eaten Fancy Feast cat food and random glucose tests show him in the range of 72-85. I just checked him last Thursday and he was 82.
Yesterday for the first time ever since being diagnosed I had to go out of town for a day. I didn't have a sitter because I thought he would be fine for 1 day. I fed him at 8 am and set out 2 cans of wet food. I returned home about 3 pm today and gave fresh food, he ate then climbed on his blanket for a nap with our other cat Weasel.
2 hours later he made a weird howling warble noise and I went over to him. He was panting and drooling. He seemed really out of it. I put some honey on my finger and rubbed on his lips. Within a few minutes he seemed to be coming out of it. I fed him a new can of food close to where he was laying and he ate almost 3/4 can of food in one sitting. I checked his glucose it was 123 and checked again 1 hour after eating it was 118.
He is not on insulin but all I could think to do was give him honey and it seemed to work. Is a cat who is OTJ at risk of seizure if they do not eat several times a day? It has been about 3 hours since the seizure he seems to be acting more normal as the night goes on.
If anyone has any input I sure would appreciate it.
    Thanks,
    Peggy

that doesn't sound like anything related to BG to me, since this cat is OTJ. I think you need to get to the vet right away. He could have had a stroke or some other neurologic situation. If he is not able to walk normally, etc, I would go to the ER now, otherwise if finances are an issue, I would go first thing in the morning.

    best wishes,
    laur

I watched him last night as he hung around with me on the couch purring then went off to bed to his usual spot, his kennel to sleep. This morning when i went into his room he greeted me as usaul circling for food. Do you know if a blood test will show if it was a stroke or is that some form of neurological test that must be given? By the way thanks for the repsonse. Peggy

Full blood work and check the blood pressure. I'd want to check kidneys, heart and electrolytes. There's a time for waiting things out and time for vet visits and this is one of those get to the vet and get things checked out times.

I think you need to speak to your vet and describe the symptoms you observed.

to make a definite diagnosis some more specialised tests would be needed, including imaging the cat's brain. These are CT (computed tomography) or MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) which will allow a direct look into the brain to see what is happening there. These images tell the vet how widespread the lesions are and if there is a brain tumour or vascular disease. The full diagnosis often also involves collecting a small sample of spinal fluid to look for signs of inflammation (white blood cells in the spinal fluid may indicate brain inflammation).

Sounds scary but isn't meant to.
It may be that your cat has had a mild seizure or stroke. The bg's sound normal to me. Even in an OTJ cat they will rise after food. The fact that it ad already started to come down again after an hour showed a working pancreas.
Food or lack of would not contribute to this, more likely coincidence.

To set your mind at rest I'd get him checked out at vet. You will have to decide what you can afford to spend financially, vet should give you a breakdown of any costs before embarking on any investigations/treatment.

Good luck and scritches to Wylie cat_pet_icon

Oh Peggy, don't think like that. What has been suggested is worse case scenario.

Besides research says that a lot of cats recover completely from strokes and go on to have completely healthy lives.

The main thing is your getting him checked out.

Please let us know how you get on.

    Paws crossed :YMHUG:

Update: I took him to the vet yesterday and she said his heart rythm was very unusual. She took an xray of his heart and suggested I go see a cadiac specialist sooner rather than later. So I took him in yesterday afternoon and they diagnosed him with congenital heart disease, thickening of the left ventrical wall. She said the good news was he had no fluid around the heart and I got him to her in time however his condtion is not curable. She said at this time, rough estmates of 500 days left but some cats respond well to medication and he could live a little longer. I will now will have to give him 3-4 pills a day starting today. (he took them lke a champ this morning)
I spent last night sitting on the couch cutting tiny, tiny pills some in half and some in quarters. The best part of it was Wylie laid next to me purrng licking his newly shaved chest! Several of his 9 lives have been challenged in the last few years but the bottom line is I got what I asked for, one more chance to savor every day with him and keep him just a little bit longer. The vet told me that there would be no easy way out for him when the time comes, there rarely is. So for now I have to say 'preparing for the worst hoping for the best' doesn't really work, I still cried. But on a positive note I see today as a plus and so will every extra morning I see him run to me! 24 hours ago I was sick today I am blessed.

    Peggy,
There are many here with heart disease that would be able to give advice and support. Please start a new thread asking for input. Maybe the situation is not as grim as your vet thinks ......

Lots of prayers and good wishes for you and Wylie

I said this to someone else and will say to you - take a look at his paws, go on look, check them out very closely - what do you see? anything on the bottom? No, nothing - that's right, that's because cat's don't come with expiration date stamps on them.

Nobody can tell you how long a cat will or will not live. So, cherish each and every day you have with him.
