Don't freak out, don't panic. 50 is the "take action" number, it's not critical yet. Don't give him too much food right now, just a tsp at a time..squeeze the gravy out of the food and give him the gravy.

(Low numbers are under 50mg/dL or 2.8 mmol/L.)
Depending on how carbohydrate sensitive your cat is, feed approximately a teaspoon or less of gravy from high carb food or high carb food only. (If you have a cat with GI issues, using a couple of drops of syrup plus low carb food is an alternative.)
Test again in 15 – 20 min. Depending on the numbers, give more HC food.
Repeat the above steps every 15 – 20 min. until your cat tests in the 50 mg/dL (2.8 mmol/L) or above range for 2 consecutive tests. Continue to feed in small amounts to keep numbers in a safe range.
Test in 30 - 40 min. and repeat the test and feed process until there are 2 consecutive tests where numbers are stable or rising.
Test in an hour and follow the same steps.
DO NOT become complacent. If number have risen after one or two tests, it’s important to continue testing. Numbers may bobble up and down as the HC food and/or Karo wear off. DO NOT get one test where your cat has risen from low numbers into the 50s and go to sleep or leave the house. You are putting your cat in a risky situation. When in doubt, leave HC food out.

He's at 84 just now

Gave him his gravy food right away.... he ate about 3/4 of the can i stupidly gave some to his broher ause i wasn't thinking so I gave him about a teaspoon maybe a tablespoon of honey...

he ate it like hes never eaten before ...going to give himsome mroe regular food right now...

84 is good. Take it easy on the food, he was eating to raise his blood sugar. You don't want to overload him on high carbs, he's rising now.
Test again in 15 -20 minutes.

He's still finishing up some pieces he had pushed off the plate and some sardines his brother left behind when I gave him a scoop to distract him from the gravy food lol

So I'll hold off on more food til the next test...

There are still scraps of the gravy food left on his plate... he licked around his and his brothers plates for gravy and some extra water I added because I don't know why I added some water after he was eating for a while lol I partly wanted to get the gravy out of the can but I also was thinking hypo might make him dehydrated cause when my blood sugar drops i want water lol...

anyway...he's still licking around but isn't still ravenously eating everything cause there are still a few scraps he's ignoring...

He's going into the litter box now

I'll be here. Is your heart still pounding? I remember that feeling, boy do I! You did well, you gave him the right food, you posted and asked for help, you checked the hypo instructions. You get a medal!
I'm still in crisis management mode but i'm going to be a mess when its over

thank you so much

Yeah, that gravy food is tasty, isn't it? LOL You have passed a hurdle no one wants, but you have this under your belt now. Be at peace. You can be a mess later and Jasper will be taking a nap! :cat:

lol he's just sitting in his hideaway under the endtable , hasn't settled down to nap there but also isn't cleaning himself the way he usually does after eating but I put my hand in to pet him and sweet talk him and he started purring which is good cause he's been really annoyed with me with all the extra testing that has been taking so many pokes.

Ok he settled in now lol...

53 at +7 is a perfect number with no intervention necessary. Next time if you’re worried try giving some of his regular low carb food instead of jumping on the gravy.

Welcome to the dance!

Is it unusual to go to 53 from only .5 units of prozinc? It's only his third time getting it, and we even skipped the second dose so like... it's the 3rd of like...what was supposed to have been four doses...if that makes sense...

@SpotsMom if the 53 at +7 was ok, and she gave the HC food and honey, then she should expect a higher PMPS, and not worry, correct? I did not use Prozinc, and did not have to give Idjit insulin for very long, so I am inexperienced here.

He’s reacting well to it. That’s a good sign. I would recommend keeping a close eye on his mid cycle lows just in case he suddenly starts needing less.

@Idjit's mom yes the number tonight may be a little higher than expected. That is normal after a new low number.

He only gets .5 and it seems like such a minuscule amount difference on the syringe... I don't know how to give him less than .5...

He is up again so I'm going to test him...

Crap... he got into his condo before I could get him lol and they don't like when we stick our hands into tight spaces like that that they feel "trapped" in under normal circumstances so I'd like have to tip him out of the condo and i don't want to stress him out like that if I don't have to...

If he's not having symptoms it's safe to wait a bit longer to test again right?

That’s where the challenge comes in. Spontaneous remission can happen especially in newly diagnosed kitties, but he’ll need insulin support until his numbers stay in the normal range all the time (50-120). With preshots in the pinks and yellows he’ll still need his shot, but some people need to microdose until a solid remission is achieved. @Idjit's mom is one of the lucky ones. Her kitty only had insulin support for a very short time before remission!

We were very lucky and I hope the remission lasts forever! One thing I will tell you JBlue, is that I recommend you follow the dosing advice of the "wise people" here about microdosing. I did not and I wish I had. I think this is the way to go to ensure the strongest, longest lasting remission you can get. Granted, an illness, infection or some medications can knock a cat out of remission, but it's the best way to get to that wonderful goal and stay there, barring unforeseen circumstances.
Learn everything you can, read other posts and the information on the board, listen to the experienced members. They will tell you how and when to lower the dose.

I think I read there are other syringes that make it possible to do smaller doses? I'll have to look into that...

There are syringes with 1/2 Unit markings, then you have to eyeball the 0.25, there is a technique for getting a drop and they will tell you how to do that.
We found ReliOn syringes with the 1/2 U marks at Walmart, we were blundering around trying to find them, kept getting the wrong syringes and I stupidly abruptly stopped insulin. Don't be like me.
Edit: I was using Lantus with different syringes, not the U-40 syringes that you are probably using. I do not know the markings of that type of syringe. Post in the Prozinc forum so they can help you with microdosing.
