we have four in our kitty crew, all rescues. Our alpha male (a Birman who’s big, but a marshmallow) was diagnosed today. I’m about to give him his first insulin shot - hoping that will perk him up a bit. He’s not feeling good right now - not sure if I can get him to eat something ... he’s pretty lethargic at the moment

Hi and welcome Jo Anne and kitty. It sounds like a busy household :)
It would be very helpful if you would create a signature so your kitty's pertinent information is available with your posts.
Set up your signature (light grey text under a post). Here's how:
click on your name in the upper right corner of this page
click on "signature" in the menu that drops down
type the following in the box that opens: kitty's name/age/date of diabetes diagnosis/insulin you're using and dosage amount /glucose meter you're using/what (s)he eats/any other meds or health issues (s)he has. You can add your name, and a geographic location (sometimes the time zone matters)
There are three basic components of effective diabetic treatment: proper diet, insulin therapy and blood sugar testing.
Have you been advised to change kitty's diet to a low carb wet food? Have you begun to home test his blood glucose (BG)?
Testing is the best tool you have to make sure it's safe to inject the insulin, help prevent a hypoglycemic event (low blood sugar which can be very dangerous) and track the effect of the insulin between the injections.
We can help with learning to home test, choosing testing equipment and supplies, a good low carb diet and also help you learn about the insulin you are injecting.
If he's lethargic and possibly uninterested in food, you definitely want to know what his blood sugar level is, whether it's very high or very low..it is very important. Especially if you have already given him his insulin shot. You want to make sure he's eating and hydrated.
