I came home from getting a quick bite to eat to find Kitty has thrown up a lot.

I found her on the screen porch continuing to heave. She threw up a little more. It kind if reminded me of how she sounds with hairballs-- but, it was pretty violent.

I have no idea if this is related to the abs, hairball--- or what.

I have tried to feed her-- not very interested. I did get her to eat a little raw meat.

What do I do? I shot 4 units tonight into 305-- now she has lost dinner and doesn't want to eat.

196--that is low for her at +2.5

I know it is not dangerous yet, but her nadir is normally +8 and that is the first 100 number I have seen in months

What was in the puke, was it a hairball or all just food.

Well tuna doesn't have any carbs, so won't bring her up.

That's only a 100 point drop, I know it's early but still ok.

She's dropped a 100 points in 2.5 hours...you may need to stay up a little late tonight to make sure she's not going too low.
Tuna would be great. Do you have any pepcid ac? That may help if she's still feeling nauseous.

do you have any pepcid ac? if so, you can give her 1/4 of a 10mg pill. if her tummy is upset she won't want to eat anything. if you don't have pepcid, does your vet have an after hours emergency contact? like if i call my vet it says "if you have an emergency, please contact advanced critical care blah blah blah....."

i don't know the whole background but got that she got an increased dose of insulin, threw up, won't eat now and recently had dental work and is on abs for that. the abs might be upsetting her gut enough to make her inappetant. which sucks given the increasingly better numbers and the increase in dose.

    what abs is she getting?

how long's it been since the throw up? maybe she just needs a little time for her tummy to settle before she will eat much of substance. probably gonna have to be careful anyway with what she does eat so as to not make her throw up again.

I know it is early in the night, but I would breathe for a little while
sometimes when they go very low in the beginning, the will even out for the rest of the time
she might not go much lower..you have time
hopefully her belly is just a little upset now and she will start to feel a little better soon.

    hang in there
    i will checkin again soon

I just got another tsp of lite cool whip in her

Won't Sue be so proud of me for testing mid cycle?!

I amnot sure if she would go hypo
I culd be wrong, but I have seen this before with Shakes where he drops big in the
first few hours, then it stables out and he goes up faster than normal
Breathe and lets wait and see what happens

crud. if her number is still up i would hold off on trying to get anything more in her just yet. let her tummy settle for a bit. maybe a dab of water is all.

if she approaches 100 or under anytime soon, i have a feeling you might have to think about the ER. don't want to wait until it's too late and if she won't eat or can't keep food down, food isn't going to be helpful if the BG level gets down too low. if she holds around these numbers for several more hours then you'll probably be ok. i just don't like that you're not going to be able to count on food to help it seems.

edited to get rid of ketone question. see you tested today for them :)
also edited to say i really really don't like the throwing up since you posted that last comment about all over the bed about the time i was typing this too :-(

 Sorry you're not getting more help from your vet. Is there another vet you can call, or an ER vet you can call? Since she's throwing up food, I'd get some karo/syrup/any kind of sugar on hand for her. That will absorb in the mouth at least, and not have to be eaten.

How long has she been on antibiotics? & which kind? Some of them REALLY upset kitty's stomach, so if you started them recently, I'd ask your vet about switching, or at least getting an anti-nausea med. When I'd give Cuddles Clavamox, I could literally HEAR her poor tummy making noises, and she wouldn't eat.

Hoping you can control the BG from going too low w/ karo/honey/syrup, but if not, don't be afraid to go to ER vet in area.. they SHOULD be able to know to hook up to dextrose/sugar drip!

Hi...just catching up here. That much vomiting is concerning. Things like dehydration can happen quickly, but you also do not know if something is causing a blockage that could potentially be a really big issue beyond the blood glucose levels.
I would take her to an ER and let them assess it and go from there.

If she is blocked, unfortunately you may make it worse by trying to feed her.

I am sorry to come in, unintroduced like this here, but am so concerned for your baby.
My name is Kimmee and my cat Abby was diabetic, diagnosed in 2006 when I found this board.
I have been on this board for many years and have rarely seen a cat vomit like this.

Please let us know how it goes at the ER and do let them know how much, and how long she has been vommitting.

Wait, she had a pretty serious dental with a bone infection & bone graft 5 days ago?? I'd definitely take her in to be seen to make sure anything else isn't causing this, or maybe switch antibiotics and/or pain meds.. but leave that up to a vet to determine!

Please also tell vet about spraying with a fungicide and tell them what is was?
if kitty has access to outside and has been feeling punky, chances are she has already injested that stuff.

really hope you are on way to ER and will come back and let us know how things are.

Just tuning in... sending good thoughts & prayers that Kitty is feeling better soon! It sounds like you are off already, but I wouldn't be too worried about her going low - I'm not sure how far you are from shot time, but the #s don't worry me much in reading through the thread. The vomiting is more concerning, hopefully the vets can give her a shot to help settle her tummy. Could be from the A/Bs, I know from my own experience they can really do a number on you.

Anyhow, hope all is well soon in Cool Kitty land!!!! :YMHUG:

I hope tonight turns out to be uneventful for you guys. If all else fails, go to the baby isle in a drug store and get a needless syringe so you can feed some watered down wet food. A 1/4 or 1/2 tablet of pepcid will bring down the nausea, but for tonight she might need an injectable med to bring down the nausea level.

The antibiotic she is on now is probably what is causing all the issues. Tomorrow you will probably need to talk to the vet that did the dental about switching to a different one.

prayers and thoughts with you both!

Hi Kim & Miss Super Cool Toothless Kitty,

I dropped by to check on my PZI peeps and kits and am so sad to see you guys have had quite a rough evening. You made the right call to take her in so they can give her some Cerenia or Anzemet to stop the vomiting. Sure hope they let you take home some buprenex for the pain, no kitty should have to go through 3 tooth extractions and a bone graft without opiates.

Sending furry prayers and whisker kisses to Miss Kitty from noir brother Harley, and a big hug to you (((((((Kim)))))))

She did have pain meds the first few days I think? My guess is that the vet is thinking after the 1st few days they don't need pain meds anymore - I had a specialist discuss this with me a few years ago and he said they really don't know how long they need the meds for - they usually give them for up to 4 or 5 days after major surgery, but the thinking is after the first 3 days or so they may not really need them, it's just kind of a perk at that point.

Just to defend the vet - not sure if that is in order, but several people have mentioned the lack of pain meds so I just wanted to give the vets the benefit of the doubt on this one!!! She may not actually need the pain meds at this point (though me being a chicken I like to throw stuff like that at them if there is any question, heck why not, as long as there aren't big side effects).

Anyhow... sorry if that is too off point, I just didn't want anyone following along to think she got sent home from the dental with no pain meds at all... (If I understood the whole thing right)

Thanks for pointing that out Joanna, I thought I'd read Kim's posts closely, but must have missed that part about having pain meds for the first 3 days. Thank God, that's much better. Didn't mean to confuse the issue. I'm with you - when I ask for pain meds for Harley I always ask for more than I think we'll need so we have extra on hand.
