When starting a new vial do I need to decrease the dose the first few days? From what I've read of vetsulin is says it's good for 42 days. We are on day 44 and I want to continue using it until it's gone if possible. I don't think there's anything wrong with potency since Angels numbers seem pretty much the same if not better. But will a new vial be stronger than what I'm currently using?

You SHOULD be fine to continue the dose as is.

But if it continues to be a concern, you can reduce for a day to make sure.

I did a reduced dose on first shot of new vial because I kept reading to do a reduced dose on new vials. However, I do use a suspension insulin. Might not apply to Vetsulin. :) Just adding another voice here :p

I used my first vial for 3 months.... There were no difference in numbers when I switched to the new vial. If your worried then reduce slightly.

Used my vial for over 2 months until numbers started to change and I could see insulin was not being as effective.

Little bit! She never shows any signs of hypo. Zero. Which kinda makes it scarier. For some crazy reason I always sense she may get low so i check more often. Last night when she dropped so much at +2 I knew shed get low so I was ready for it. Tried to steer with extra food early on but didn't work well enough.

Hey Cherish! How are you and Ms. Angel? :cat: Are you planning to get a curve, even mini curve done, on your next day off? Curious if her nadir has moved ;)

Well, Angel what an interesting way to start off the morning . This is the second time she's had a low PS, by chance did you try stalling this morning, Cherish? Waiting 20 minutes without feeding and re-test? First time on 28 April, you skipped shot, perfectly fine since it was the first time but she did rise. Looks like she went up again at +3.

Feel free to ignore what I'm going to say, I can be a little aggressive because I hate seeing that bounce . If you or bf would be around to monitor, next time she gives you the 100-120 PS range, maybe try stalling first and if she stays around that range try giving 0.25U. Let me know what you think ;). Maybe someone else will chime in and tell you to ignore this crazy person (me:smuggrin:) lol

Part of me wanted to give her .25u but other part of me got super anxious so I decided not to. It's really hard to stall on work mornings. I wake up at 5am and need to be to work by 6am most days. So I have an hour to deal with kitty and then get myself ready. I don't want to give her the shot any sooner than 5 because I want to be able to give her the 5pm shot and sometimes I barely make it home. But always do! So it's tough. Also don't wanna wake any earlier than 5 on days off. ;) lol

I know she will be high tonight but it's ok. I think she's doing pretty well overall :)

Looks like she's clearing bounces faster too :). I don't think you'll need to give 3.0U very much right now . I'm no dosing expert but I'd be curious to try this:

80 - 100: 0.25U (Given she's needed a little more at these numbers it's usually because the previous dose was too high and caused a bounce, so if we settle it to not be a bounce number, she may react differently and not go back up)
    100 - 150: 1.0U
    150 - 200: 1.5U
    200+: 2.0U

@JanetNJ What do you think about trying this for a few days? With Cherish and Bf's usual monitoring :cat:

Also to add, I know I should be more cautious but I worry about dropping the doses too much and having her get back up into the 400's and then have it take several weeks to get her regulated again. :(

If you look at the last 10 days... her morning doses that I've given her seem to be just enough. She never got below 55 or above 200.

And even her nignt time doses the last 10 days she has only gotten below 50 once. Other than that I think her nadir numbers have been great. I guess I need someone to explain to me why I need to drop the doses down so much. :)

The problem is he's going low in the evening which is causing a bounce in the morning.

Right, when the dose is too much in her AM cycle, it makes her have a low PMPS and then she bounce a little by next AMPS. The suggested reductions are aimed to keep her in good numbers for a cycle but give you two closer PS numbers :).

You're not doing anything wrong :bighug:. We're just trying to fine tune it now ;)

But what you said makes perfect sense. Going to see what Janet says about the sliding scale and then I'm going to put yours and hers together and hopefully see an improvement :) thanks so much!

Ok had a chance to look at the ss a little more.

I agree with yong's scale but would add another level at the top.

    100-150 1
    150-200 1.5
    200-250 2
    250-300 2.25
    300+ 2.5

Depends how under and if you can monitor. I personally never shot that low. I think the lowest I ever shot was 120....

Then again that was on an Alphatrak... So I guess it was like a 100 on human meter.

If you shoot under 100, I suggested 0.25U for 80 - 100 in case the cause for it is not too high a previous dose. She may not bounce like usual with new scale :)

Well if it's quite a bit lower in a cycle... Then goes high. Like it goes down to 60 from 250, then shoots up to 350.... You know the first dose was too high.

Of it goes from 250 to 90 back to 250 that's fine.

I'm still thinking 2.5U is a little too much for over 300. Her PMPS might shed more light on that tonight. If so, I'd say switch to Janet's 2nd scale.
    100-150 0.5
    150-200 1
    200-250 1.5

Dose can be too high and cause a delayed bounce like last night and possibly tonight. If she keeps it up, we can adjust the scale again :bookworm:

I mean food she eat a little while before her nadir number. That might explain why it was higher in the middle.

2.5 is too high.... It's making her fall far then bounce. On those pink preshots drop the dose. Go with the second scale.

Wow, ok might take that top number down to 2, not 2.25. Keep going, Angel!

    What do we think about

    100-125. 0.25
    125-175 0.5
    175-225 1
    225-300 1.5
    300+ 2

Some days she is fine with a larger amount of insulin so it's like a juggling act and so frustrating. But a few days ago at over 300 and 2 units she did really well. I think i went back to the higher scale because of her 200+ nadir a few nights ago. Just gotta be more patient.

The thing is when she is 350 and goes down to say 100, while its a nice safe nadir, it is bound to trigger a bounce from dropping like 60%. The goal is to stabalize the numbers and try to get those preshots down so the bouncing stops.... Once the preshots are lower you can get into those lower nadir numbers without triggering bounces.

Weird kitty. Hope her PM nadir gets a little better. Maybe dropping over 300 to 1.75u and anything under to 1.5. So doesn't seem to do well with super small doses like 1 unit or under. We will see! Giving it more time. :)

Sounds good to me :). Remember PM nadir is probably a little higher due to bouncing from higher AM dose ;)

Good day today! We played for probably 20 minutes. Running around like a kitten. :) you can barely even notice the neuropathy anymore. Those Zobaline pills are really something!
