Rockefeller (Rockie) our 12 year old tabby diagnosed with diabetes this week. BG level 29 (rounded up) on our new home kit taken at the vet. Reading was accurate, i.e., in synch with the vet's meter.

Vet visits stress Rockie out and he hates being taken to the vet. Feel his BP readings may have spiked with blood work examination etc. at the clinic on Monday. Waiting to re-test at home on Thursday (tomorrow) post changing diet and 2 units of insulin (Caninsulin) every 12 hours. First injection at home was likely a fur shot as fur felt wet (did not re-inject till the next shot eas due). Had better luck since.

Surprising Rockie is not overly fussed with change in diet and the necessary poking and prodding. Rockie has been unusually cooperative which is very helpful.

We take turns to stay up and watch for anything unusual... think there is glimmer of hope during periods when Rockie seems alert and paying attention to surroundings. Fingers crossed about the possibility Rockie will walk on this toes again or improvement in his gait.

Your thoughts or experience most welcome.

Good morning and welcome Rockie and cat parents. You are in the right place to get some answers to your concerns and questions. I think the very best thing for you to do at this point is copy and paste your post here into a new thread in the Main Health forum: HERE
It appears Rockie is having trouble walkiing, correct? This could be neuropathy and there is treatment for that. This forum is not used to provide advice, plus there are more eyes on the Main forum to begin responding.
Please make a signature, so that Rockie's pertinent information is available with your posts. It saves valuable time asking/answering the same questions again and again. A link on how to do that: SIGNATURE
Let us know either in the profile or the signature where you are, the BG measurement indicates a non US location.
Then, get the spreadsheet set up so that the insulin injections/dose plus the BG test results can also be viewed by advising members. This is attached to the signature and is a good way to detect patterns. Here is a link to the area where the instructions and how to understand the grid are: SPREADSHEET
If you have not already done so, read the Getting Started and the Education information on the right side of the Home page. This is starting out information you need to know.

***If you are changing his diet to a low carb wet food, you need to be testing at home as the diet change can significantly lower the BG level and you need to be aware of what is happening in Rockie's body. Test every Pre-shot to be sure it is safe to do so, and mid cycle to see how low he is going. **** See how to treat a hypo, be prepared just in case: HYPO

Visit the Caninsulin forum to read about using that insulin, HERE . There are experienced users in that forum that can help with insulin questions.

I know this seems like a lot, and it is. I apologize and I do not want you to feel more overwhelmed than you already are. The signature and spreadsheet are housekeeping, the information about hypos is extremely important, the reading is in response to your quest for information. We are here to help and care very much. :cat:

Welcome. If you want to be sure he's ok without watching him constantly, home testing will take that uncertainty away. We are here for you if you have any questions
