The goal is to feed less than 10 carb valued food. However, you do want to keep some high carb food available, preferably one with lots of gravy in case you need it for your hypo kit.

We recommend feeding only canned or raw food. And if you are feeding dry food, to gradually stop feeding it. If you read Dr. Lisa's site, she explains why dry food of any quality is not a good food choice for cats: www.catinfo.org

Many cats do best with 0 - 3 % carb foods. You don't have to buy prescription or expensive brands. Readily available commercial brands are just fine. You do want to read the ingredients and be sure of what it contains. For example, rice, carrots, peas, potatoes are carbs and not good for cats. However, some low carb foods do contain these ingredients and depending on how your cat reacts could be ok to feed.

Food with gravy, typically are higher carb and not what you want to feed - such as diced, sliced, grilled flavor foods are high carb. Mushy or pate style typically are lower carb and better to feed.

I don't want to suggest brands as I have a feeling you are not in the US and if you can tell us where you are located, we may be able to help you source the right brands and food type for your area. We do have members from all over the world.

If you are in the US, then it is even easier and using the food charts will be a huge help. For example Fancy feast makes classic style food which is lower in carb and pate style. They also have gravy lovers which is great for your hypo kit.

Also, will you share your cat's information with us. Age, when diagnosed, how it was determined, symptoms cat showed, etc.

Is the cat on insulin, what type, how much and how often are you giving insulin.

Are you familiar with home testing? Will you be open to learning how to do it?

The more information you can provide to us, the better we can assist you. and welcome to the group.

Welcome! Has your cat been diagnosed as diabetic? If so, read the FAQs and ask questions! If you need help, be sure to let us know what type of insulin you are using, what food you are feeding. Are you home testing glucose levels? We have members all over, so if you post your general location there may be someone nearby who can help you learn.

    Good luck!
