    Hi There,

Our 13 year old cat Mick was recently diagnosed with Feline Diabetes :(

His first week on glargine has been pretty painless so far but we aren't seeing a big reduction in his blood sugars. He started at 21.8 and went down to 11.3 at one point but is hovering around 17 again. Hoping to continue to monitor and find a dose that's best for him.

He was also dealing with some crystals and on amoxicillan, his last dose is supposed to be Wednesday am but he's still straining a bit to urinate. Tough to tell if it's from his weak hind legs or the urinary issues. Anyone had any experience helping strengthen their back legs while they're still lethargic?

We've changed his food up from good ol' purina to low gycemic and wet food. I'm not sure if it's the food change or all the meds but he's been having some explosive diarrhea over the last few days. To make matters worse, he lays down in it right after so it's been a messy few days.

Hopefully Mick will continue to get better.

    A+B

Oh dear, poor Mick. He's been having a bad time, and it doesn't sound like you are enjoying it much either. We would very much like to offer some suggestions and provide information about the hind leg weakness, as well as diet, his lethargy, and the gastro-intestinal problems.

Would you please take a few minutes and create a signature so that we can see Mick's pertinent info right away whenever you post?
Setting up your signature (light grey text under a post). Here's how:
click on your name in the upper right corner of this page
click on "signature" in the menu that drops down
type the following in the box that opens: kitty's name/age/date of diabetes diagnosis/insulin you're using and dosage amount /glucose meter you're using/what he eats/any other meds or health issues he has. You can add your name, and a geographic location (sometimes the time zone matters) Be sure to SAVE when you are finished.

It sounds like you are testing Mick's blood sugar at home, so you could also set up a spreadsheet like the one we use here. You will see how the trends and patterns emerge, and members can review his progress before offering suggestions or advice:
    Spreadsheet instructions
    Understanding the spreadsheet

Then please post a new thread in the Main Health forum HERE so that more members can meet you and Mick, and we can get busy with information and help. If you like, you can just copy your message here and paste it in a new thread there.

A good place to start reading is the FAQs forum, there is very good information in the Index that will be helpful to you. There is also an insulin support group forum dedicated to glargine insulin types with additional information that you will find useful: LANTUS

    Best wishes going forward :cat:
