Hi. I’m still a little confused about what is an ideal blood glucose level. My cat Xena is in remission, and I will be monitoring her levels. I’ve seen a few reference ranges on the internet such as 70-120 mg/dL, but my vet doesn’t want her dipping below 100. She’s usually in the upper 90’s. Thanks!

Normal range on a pet meter is 68-150 and on a human meter is 50-120

If your cat is in remission and not getting any insulin she can't hypo

If your cat is not on insulin, what is your vet worried about? Is he/she suggesting you do something to prevent the glucose from going below 100?

Hi. That is my mistake. The vet was worried when her levels were in the 80’s while on insulin. I thought it was still an issue regardless of whether or not she is on insulin. I didn’t know they can’t hypo without insulin. My brother is on the pump which alarms when his level is too low so I assumed cats were the same. Thanks for clarifying!

The lab that does my cat's blood work (Idexx) has a 'normal' level up to 170. I always wondered about the different 'normal' levels at different labs.

I think they take into account a bit of vet stress and possibly eating recently so they bump the number up a bit.

There are differing professional opinions on this topic, too. Also, some cats run naturally higher or lower than others. Bottom line here is that if your cat is staying in the 90s with no insulin, you need to go have a party and stop worrying. :D
