thank you... and an update...

thank you everyone! you all have me in tears... grateful tears. alex is pretty sick and needs every snowflake you're so generously sending her way.

will make this update short because it's time for another feeding. all the tests have come back. the official diagnosis is "an unknown causing severe liver disease and acute renal crisis". FIP and C&S were negative, thyroid is fine. much to my chagrin, the vet did an fTLI instead of an fPLI. results of the fTLI were ok. so, to make a long story short, we're treating symptoms... daily administration of sub-q fluids spiked with B and B complex vitamins, denamarin (thanks for the suggestion, chris), clavamox, pepcid ac, and food... as much food as i can get into her. if we can get past this crisis we will look at diet as well as other options. alex has also been back on insulin as a preventative measure. we don't want whatever functioning beta cells she has left in her pancreas to burn out while she's so sick. balancing this part has been tricky because i have to feed her as much as possible (many, many mini-meals finger fed because she is inappetant and nauseous) and after she eats she produces her own insulin. figured that one out a few days ago when she dropped early in the cycle and had to use karo to get her numbers back up. :/

the next step is biopsies. we'd have to go to UT Knoxville (about 4 hours from here) and as treatment is the same as what we're doing, i don't see much point in putting her through it. bloodwork will be done again this coming tuesday to see if we're making any progress.

some days are better than others. right now we're hoping to string two good days together. alex has her moments (i've been bitten), but overall she's been pretty tolerant. i think she knows i'm trying to help her.

i miss reading about each and every LL kitty. hope to be posting on a regular basis soon. take care... and thank you again!

Latte wanted me to tell you that when she is feeling really bad, she especially likes to make her bean work extra hard to get her purring. She said purring is a soothing sound and helps with healing.

I would second, third, fourth...or whatever the ondansetron at this point. And, if Alex is vomiting, cerenia would probably be a good choice. You can put the ondansetron in the fluids (through the extra port), or inject it like insulin (may sting a bit).

it sounds like you doing all the right things. Most importantly you are showing Alex your love and dedication. That, above all is the most important thing.

I am sorry to hear things are not going well for Alex. I hope she recovers soon. Tigger had severe liver disease a few years ago and the prognosis from the vet wasn't good, but here it is almost three years later and he has normal liver values. Sending lots of healing vibes for your girl.
