Squeak back on Vetsulin

Squeak was on vetsulin, went into remission, came out of remission and I tried Lantus. I never felt I properly understood Lantus protocol and switched Squeak back to Vetsulin a few days ago.

Fingers crossed I can get his numbers to stabilize.

 

Keep in mind that it is a mix of 2 different duration insulins, so you must roll the vial to mix well before drawing up the dose. Plus, it may have 2 nadirs one around +3 to +4 hours after the shot, and another around +5 to +6 hours after the shot. It depends on the cat, the moons around Jupiter, etc.
In some cats, it may wear off before 12 hours is up. If it wears off around +9 to +10, an option is TID shooting, every 8 hours if your schedule permits.

 

Thanks. We used vetsulin earlier last year and Squeak went into remission very quickly. I don't dare hope for that again, but I do hope to gt him regulated.

 

Keeping our paws crossed that Squeak gets some better BG readings soon.

 

I'm sorry to hear Squeak is back on insulin. Did the vet give any feedback on what might have knocked him out of remission?

It's nice to see you, but I'm really sorry that Squeak is back on insulin....
Any chance of an infection? UTI maybe...?
Or could he have got into some high carb food...?

Hello, I am new not only to this site but the knowledge my male of 14 years has diabetes, after the initial doc visit she said his count is 600. He is on a twice daily regimen of 1.5cc of Vetsulin. It has been nearly 30 days and not seeing any noticeable improvement in his liquid intake and his deposits. I am going to schedule another test soon to see if his number is coming down.

 

Hi Stevie12014. You've posted in our Vetsulin/Caninsulin section first, and I doubt many folks have seen you.

Perhaps you'd like to post in our introduction section here and tell us more about you and your cat.

That said,

Vetsulin may last only 8-10 hours in the cat (it was developed for dogs, which have a slower metabolism).

Are you home testing the blood glucose? Doing that will let you know how well the Vetsulin is working and if it is safe to give it. An inexpensive human glucometer such as the WalMart ReliOn Confirm or the Target Up and Up, matching test strips, and alternate site lancets are all you need to pick up from the pharmacy. a tube of Neosporin Ointment with pain relief can help reduce the annoyance of testing.

What are you feeding him? We recommend low carb, over the counter food, such as Friskies pates. Unless you are testing, though, keep the food the same as an abrupt change to lower carb food may drop the glucose 100-200 mg/dL and drop the insulin requirement 1-2 units, depending on the cat.

Hi guys, thanks for all your help, my male 14 yrs. has been on Vetsulin for about 3 months and no different changes. I love my guy and now he is having walking issues, he is utilizing his entire rear legs from knee to paw to walk. I will comfort him as much as possible but.....

 

Last time Sam was diabetic he also developed neuropathy in his back legs. I got him on Methylcobalamin which is a type of Vitamin B12 and he had a full recovery - like a miricle!

 

I am not a expert by any means but I had my 15 year old cat on vetsulin for about 3 weeks and it did lower some numbers but I really felt in my gut it was not the best choice for him --it may be good for others but if you are not having positive results you may want to consider a different insulin. When we went on vetsulin my kitty had a different personality-he was depressed and distant etc…. when I switched to PZI he had none of this-He was about 400BG when diagnosed at vet-(stress I am sure made this a bit higher ) When I switched his food he dropped to the 200's-
His numbers are looking good on PZI as well. He also gets sub q fluids because his KI values were elevated--we are retesting next week. --I hope your guy feels better soon! It is very frustrating but try to be positive -- I know my guy can totally sense when I am positive and it perks him up he knows when I am faking too ) hugs…
I also went to see a kitty specialist DR who is very familiar with tight protocol--my regular Dr is awesome but he will admit he has learned from me doing the tight protocol-we are definitely working with the kitty Dr on this one. This forum is filled with people who can guide you……best to you….

 

I am having quite a time with the Lantus learning curve myself.... but didn't feel I was ever going to regulate my guy bouncing around on Caninsulin. Best of luck this time around

 

Well my Max is on Vetsulin, diagnosed 3.5 weeks ago. Vet had tried him on Humlin while staying there the first week. Couldn't regulate, brought him home for the weekend because she he wouldn't eat up there. When I took him back Monday week ago, they tried him on Vetsulin, 2.5 units once a day! I brought him home last Friday. After getting him home I changed his dosage from 2.5 once a dat to 1 unit twice a day. You can look at his SS. Just 2 days ago I upped to 1.5 units twice a day, trying that for a few days. Trying to go slow because I sure don't want him going too low. The people n this website have been way more helpful for me (than the vet)

Make sure to get pm pre shot tests. Billy went from high 400s to 40s in a day with vetsulin, and the biggest drops were at night. There is a chance he could go hypo on you, and you would need to be testing to catch. You can also lower the dose if his pre shot is lower than normal. Best of luck! Nice blue numbers recently
