Squirt, my 5 yr old cat, was diagnosed with diabetes last week. I am just learning my way around the ins and outs of needles, food, and saying no to treats. I know she can have a few but I also have a grossly overweight cat so it is s good time to make changes. I welcome any and all suggestions.

Welcome to you and Squirt! You don't have to say no to treats, just make sure they are low carb and fed in moderation. Many of us use Pure Bites which is simply freeze dried meat. You can find it at Petsmart.

Thank you. I had not heard of those. I will pick some up tomorrow after work That type of treat should help my fat boy as well

I order Pure Bites from chewy.com in the large dog size bags. It's cheaper than the small cat size bags. I crush the pieces smaller so it's easier for him eat. I like the cat man doo bonito flakes Fritz loves them. Welcome you are at the right place.
My Fritz was diagnosed Feb 11th 2016 and I was so confused and struggling to treat him till I found this forum. It's overwhelming at first but with the gentle guidance and the knowledge and experience the members have you'll find it comforting and very helpful.

What are you feeding Squirt and what type of insulin is he on?
I feed her 1/3 can wet food/Meow Mix and in the evening Fancy Feast 1/3 a can fish. Also a little dry Hill WD. Vet is ok with what I give her. Trouble is she also finishes the other cats food the minute she gets a chance. Insulin is Novolin provided by vet

Thank you. I appreciate the help you give me.

hi and welcome. Are you buying everything from the vet? You can get syringes from online and local pharmacy for a lot cheaper. Only a handful of states require a prescription for them. Walmart is the cheapest place I am finding syringes, meter and supplies for the meter right now. Also the wet cat food to along with coupons. I am thinking automatic pet feeder might be a good idea for your cat to do portions through the day if you could separate from your other cat?
Ideas for exercise- laser pointers seem to work well, harness and leash walking works for some cats not all, about 30mins of activity a day should help.
How much are you paying for insulin now?

I purchased everything (i.e. Needles and insulin ) from vet for the initial injections. Cat food I usually buy at grocery store or Petsmart. Treats the same. The first vet I saw charged me $300 approx plus said I would have to buy prescription food. He wanted $200 more for a pancreatic culture but she was exhibiting no signs of pancreatitis so I declined. Second vet I saw takes more down to earth view. I had gone to him before and he loves cats so I am very comfortable with him. I see him Thursday for her blood test which I will start doing on my own once we get the proper dosage decided
Appreciate all your feedback and I certainly will be visiting Wal-Mart in the next couple days. Did you get s needle dispensary box from them as well?

Make sure you get all your home testing supplies and take them with you to the vetappt so they can show you how to use it and compare it to there test to see how many points its off. You can get a sharps container. My first visit when he ws diagnosed as diabetic was $370.00. 90.00 was insulin and syringes.Of course I didnt know about this forum until afterwards. Petsmart sale price for the wet food i buy is walmarts regular price so with coupons its cheaper to get everything at walmart for me.
