My cat is sweetie she is 7 years old. We just found out today she has diabetes. She is dehydrated and in the Animal Hospital. When she is better in a few days she will get to come home. Any and all information would be great. Thanks

Welcome to FDMB, the best place you never wanted to be.

There are 4 things you'll need to manage your kitty's diabetes:
    - You - without your commitment, the following won't work.
    - Home blood glucose monitoring with an inexpensive human glucometer such as the WalMart Relion Confirm or Target Up and Up (the pet ones will break your budget!). This saves you the cost of going to the vet for curves and done regularly, removes the need for a fructosamine test. Yes, you really can use a human glucometer to monitor your cat.
    - Low carb over the counter canned or raw diet, such as many Friskies pates. See Cat Info for more info. If already on insulin, you must be home testing before changing the diet. Food changes should be gradual to avoid GI upsets - 20-25% different food each day until switched. There are 2 low carb, dry, over the counter foods in the US - Evo Cat and Kitten dry found at pet specialty stores and Young Again 0 Carb found online.
    - A long-lasting insulin such as ProZinc, Lantus, BCP PZI, or Levemir. No insulin lasts 24 hours in the cat, so giving it every 12 hours is optimal for control. The current pricing on Lantus and Levemir in the US make it worthwhile to locate a good Canadian mail order pharmacy to get the costs reasonable. Otherwise, purchasing a single pen of Lantus or Levemir (try Target, or a hospital pharmacy) can make it reasonable. And the pens can be used up to about 6 months if refrigerated, no matter what the pharmacist tells you.

    Hi Brenda,

Is there any news on how Sweetie is doing? It is always so worrying when our little ones are away from us. :bighug:

Sweetie is still in the hospital on Thursday they're going to run more tests and are continuing to hydrate her if her kidneys start working proper She will be ok And I don't want to think if not because the alternative is not good.

Sweeties kidneys are working better :) her white blood cells were off really bad they said thats a infection somewhere and started her on a second antibiotic today. They're going to keep her in the hospital for 24 hours more and monitor her on the new antibiotic If all goes well she may come home tomorrow :)
