    Hello All,

This is my first time posting for my cat Perry (11 years old). He was diagnosed with diabetes in early January of this year. We started him on Prozinc at 1unit twice a day and slowly increased to 2.0 where we began seeing readings of about 70 occasionally at the point he was to get his morning dose. We backed off going down to 1.0 and with the appearance of numbers in the 400’s slowly increased to 1.75 units.

With this dosage he shows around 330 before his morning injection, and goes down to 260-280 after about 4-5 hours. (We are not doing full curves but one or two samples per day).

Our vet is suggesting a change to Lantus and we are wondering if this is a good idea or if we should stick with a higher dose of Prozinc. Perry’s readings are VERY consistent from day to day but we don’t get a large enough decrease during they day.

Perry has some other problems regarding his heart which have kept the vet from feeling safe regarding doing dental work (which he could use). Also, Perry has 15 other cats in his household so timed feedings are not in the picture and there is a CRF cat that has dry KD (high carbs) food available. However, we are work at home parents and can almost always catch him and guide him to the proper low carb foods. And with his weight loss, he cannot afford to not eat when he is hungry.

Our main question is, are we leaving Prozinc too soon, or does Perry seem like a good candidate for Lantus.
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Chris & Patti, parents of Perry
