    Hello everyone,

Our vetenarian diagnosed our cat with diabetes last weekend. He was himself surprised by the lab results indicating a glucose level of 25 mmol/L (or 450 mg/dl), and everything else normal, as our cat gained 2 pounds since last year. He now weights 6 kg (about 13 pounds).

The symptoms that prompted us to consult were that our cat has been routinely relieving himself outside his litter boxes (he has 2 very clean litter boxes), especially when he is frustrated by something (when he can’t go outside - he is an indoor cat).

We noticed in the last month a slight increase in his demand for food and water, but not a dramatic one. He also acts normally. His last lab results were done in June 2017, and everything was normal. He is 9 years old.

Is it possible that he has diabetes, but still gains weight?

    Hi and welcome!

Considering that the weight gain is considering his weight from a year ago, it could be that he gained the weight before presenting the high blood glucose levels, and since he just started showing some symptoms you probably catch it early and he hasn't started losing weight, which is good because the earlier you start the treatment the better they respond to it. Also take into account that as with other illnesses not all cats present all symptoms each cat is different
