Ever so slowly, we seem to be making headway with Austin.

I've been home bg testing for a few weeks now and haven't seen his levels come down to anything even slightly resembling and my last post was very disheartened.

Just this week we changed his diet and increased his lantus to 5 units twice a day and today we finally (after 2 days at 5 units) got a result in the normal range - woot!

Have changed his diet to home brand tuna or sardines, 1/2 cup of biscuits/day (between him and his sister, also an indoor cat).I'm also feeding him fresh meat (usually the off cuts while preparing dinner).

It's good you are seeing lower numbers. If you can cut those biscuits out, you probably would see still lower numbers. There are some good low carb snacks like freeze dried meats and bonito flakes.

I would try to add some other canned foods to the diet. We try not to feed exclusively seafood because of the mercury levels and the likelihood that they may then refuse other types of protein. The table meat is lo carb, but missing some essential nutrients that cats need. Have you seen Dr. Lisa's website on food: http://www.catinfo.org. She is a great resource on diet for all cats, but especially diabetics. If you check Janet and Binky's food charts, you should be able to find some wet lo carb between 8-10% carbs and feed a variety. http://www.felinediabetes.com/diabetic-cat-diets.htm

It sounds like things are gradually improving. A decrease in insulin might be in your future!
