Hello, my cat was recently diagnosed with diabetes. When should I home test his BG count? Before eating and insulin dose, or after? In the morning, or at night? Thanks in advance!

Hi. You will want to test before feeding and giving the insulin shot. It is best to make sure he does not have food for at least two hours before you test so that the number you get will not be impacted by food. Do this before both the am and pm shots. If you can also get at least one mid-cycle test, somewhere near the middle of the cycle, it will help you see the impact of the insulin. Over time, you will gather enough data to see patterns and make dosing decisions.

It would be helpful if you would set up a signature to provide some basic info (like you see on all of our posts) and a spreadsheet to track your testing results.
