I am no longer able to control Stubbie's BG. He was near death, then in hospital two days (again), this time with ketoacidosis, and is home now with SQ fluids, potassium supplements, Cerenia, Famotidine and Famvir (the latter, for his herpes), the others for chronic pancreatitis, in addition to diabetes. He basically has lived on the last three meds for almost two years. An ultrasound showed some thickening of his intestine and his specialist said that may be causing irregular, unstable absorption of nutrients and his insulin. At the time she prescribed budesinide, which can send cats into diabetes and send diabetic cats into dysregulation, which I believe happened and hasn't resolved in six months since that medication was stopped. I realize we are close to the end here, as he has had unstable numbers for some time. His diet hasn't changed; same high protein pates and excellent dry food for three years, and a year ago, we were doing "great." He had excellent numbers yesterday on his normal dose, and today at nadir, they are in the 300s, and this has been how it is...He's on Prozinc as Lantus did not control him.

He is also totally "over" the pills, needles and general poking and prodding. When I adopted him on FBook, I flew him from Illinois to SoCal, and learned so much about this disease. He was supposedly "two years old," but he was probably 10, and he had had no care for his diabetes. His diabetes was not insurable, of course, and he has been one very expensive kitty--you all know this, for sure. I had no idea how unstable he could become, and how his immune system would be forever compromised. The herpes animal has been unrelenting, indeed. And his eyesight is terrible; yes, he's on drops--which he hates.

Have any of you experienced this, when nothing you do can stabilize those numbers? Oh, and he can also bounce when I increase his dosage, sending him down to hypo range, then back up again. I understand we cannot work miracles...It is totally devastating, isn't it? Love this little one sooo much.

I am so sorry to hear of your struggles. I do not have experience in any of the matters, I just wanted to give you my support and let you know that you are not alone. I hope someone has some answers for you and Stubbie, and that you can find some help and resolution. :bighug::bighug::bighug:
