It looks like the Panacur has worked as far as the eosinophils are concerned. They are now right in the middle of the normal range. Xuxu is doing well and pretty happy. He's eating like there's no tomorrow. He must have gone through 6 cans of FF fish variety in the last 2 days. As soon as he finishes one, he's meowing for another. He is still as stubborn as ever on the dry food. Even though he's eaten 1.5 cans of FF, if I let him out of the bedroom, he will make a beeline for the dry Iams bowl. Since he's feeling better, he's too fast for me to catch before he gets there. But he knows he's not suppose to, so when he hears me coming, he grabs a couple of crunches and then runs under the couch to finish them. After that, if I see him getting near the bowl, a stern NO keeps him away from it. I guess just a couple is his FIX so he's willing to do without after that. It doesn't seem possible that 3-4 kibble pieces will hurt him, but I'm trying to hold firm.

But his BG is following his normal curve of going back up to 750 after 12 hours, even 10.5 or 11 sometimes. I'm doing an aggressive protocol of testing him 2 hours after the Lantus shot, if it hasn't started lowering the BG, then I give him .5R to make sure it goes down. He hasn't crashed or gone DKA. I know keeping him in the 200-300 range at nadir isn't good in the long run, but it's better than the state he was in before. He's still a doll about getting his blood taken and his shots, knock on wood.

So, even though every single specialist we've talked with has said to follow the eosinophils, that their cause was his main problem, I'm now wondering if that is correct. The Eos may have been high because he had a slight respiratory infection or virus, and with all the antibiotics we've poured down him, it's just taken care of that problem. He's certainly not sneezing anymore. or the Panacur might have reset his immune system by shocking it. I've heard of that before too. The cause of the Eos may be totally disconnected from the BG cause.

My vet went to a diabetic seminar for her continuing ed credits. The speaker was Rebecka Hess, DVM, DACVIM, Univ of Penn. She loves Lantus, hates Levemir, says PZI is ok. She presented several difficult dog cases of DM for the attendees to do differentials on but nothing on cats. I'm going to call her and see if she will do an online consult on Xuxu.

We are still waiting on the PZI from BCP. Called them today and they said they hadn't received the fax. We refaxed and they promised to get it out on Monday. But Monday is a Fed holiday, so that means Tues. I assume I'll have it by Wed, but I have to work in DC on Thurs and FRi, so I don't dare start him on it until Sat when I can be there all day.

Gilor, who did his dissertation on Levemir in cats, is now at Ohio State Univerity. That might be too far to commute, but could also be worth a consult.
