I gave him his first shot ever of Levemir tonight - 1U - and he has been going crazy itching and licking the injection site - is this normal?

has anyone else had this or noticed this?

I have not had this with any of my 3 that have gotten lev. Nor have I ever heard of it here.

I would post this question on Health. I wonder if he has an allergy to one of the ingredients or it was just a one time thing? Maybe ask your vet about it.

I read on the manufacturer's website that itching can happen and goes away in a few days.. hopefully this is a temp thing.. He seems ok this am.. It lasted about 1.5-2 hrs last night. I sat with him and put an ice pack against the site for a bit and that seemed to help him.

It is possible to be allergic to any medication.

The carrier solution for the insulin might be suspect or even the insulin molecule itself, since it is configured a bit differently from feline insulin.

he has been fine ever since that first shot last thursday pm. He seems more stable on this insulin - and at 1U.. His pre-shots have been between 190-260.. so, there is room for improvement, but the main thing is that he stops bouncing which I think has to be hard on his metabolism.
