I'm really confused on what doses I should be giving Jose while he is on ABs and healing from his dental. The vet gave him 10 more days of Orbax because the incisor extraction has not healed as much yet as she would like.

I really do not want Jose to be in the 300s but I also do not want to cause him to bounce by going too low. I am in need of I device on what to dose. I was going to give him 2.4 u again tonight but decided to back off a bit. Not sure if this was the best thing to do. I could use some advice on how to dose while he continues to heal on ABs.

Two units sounds good to me, Rebecca. I'd say try to keep him in safe numbers until the meds are gone. If the incision isn't healing, he may be in some pain also, which can raise the bg levels too. Did she suggest any kind of pain killer?

Then you can get back on track, once everything settles down.

It really is! I've been trying to post and read comments for the past 4 hours. At least I'm able to now. The vet gave me three days of Onsior but that's it. Do you think I should ask for more? I posted about all of this on the Facebook page when the board wasn't working and someone had said that he should be on clindamycin and not Orbax that Orbax is generally used for wounds and clindamycin is used for dental infections. Is this the case? If so why would my vet give me Orbax then? Things like this confuse me.

Antibiotics can cover more than 1 pathogen type. If you look it up, it may indicate whether it works for anaerobic or aerobic bacteria or both, and in what families of bacteria it can be effective. Depending on what the vet's clients have been responding to, the vet also may use that experience to select an antibiotic, too. (I've been reading about antibiotics due to a sinus infection I've had ... since January. I'm the 4th round of antibiotics!)

My vet gave Onsior for Gracie's dental ... but she had numerous teeth pulled, and we had some narcotic pain reliever left when we couldn't give it to a rather fractious different cat, so I gave that too. Narcotics can be sedating or have unpredictable effects, so I was very cautious with it.
