Re: New to ProZinc - Hypo today - need pm dose advice

Hi,

I'm so glad that everything worked out for you today.

I think I posted in your original thread that it isn't uncommon to skip or give a reduced dose after a hypo as they are more sensative to the insulin after.

The higher number, last test was 300's right, that's not all that high after today, is from the High Carb food and syrup that you've given so it is not a true bg number and the sugar will wear off. You don't want to shoot a sugar induced # and send her too low again.

I tend to be more conservative than most, so if it were my cat, I wouldn't shoot tonight.

Last year after Harley's only hypo I didn't shoot a 400's, I was too scared. He went OTJ shortly after that.

Hopefully others will add their advise shortly.

Welcome to PZIsland.

Robin

I've seen that mentioned before to skip a shot after a hypo, that's cool Harley went OTJ after that - Tomtom did the same, right?

My hesitancy in this case is you have a ketone history, and dry food, so I'd probably be inclined to give something, even if it's only 1u. I don't have hypo dosing experience though, so hopefully you'll get more input either here or on Health (if you haven't shot yet... I think I'm a couple hours behind the curve!)

Someone in health suggested 1 unit too. I forgot about the ketones. Do what you feel comfortable with.

Re: New to ProZinc - Hypo today - need pm dose advice

sorry for the delay in update. computer issues... :(

Anyhow, she was over 600 last nite, so I gave her 2u for her eve shot. This am she's high 300s. Still need to update the spreadsheet.

Learned a lot this weekend and so today we'll start transitioning things. Gotta connect with the vet and let him know what we are wanting to do and see if we stay with the Prozinc as we change over to the wet food.

Don't be surprised if you don't see any updates for a bit. Back to work today. Won't be able to monitor as closely, but one of us should be able to get home and check on her mid day and do a bg. She did good last nite on the 2u so I'm not going to stress to much.

Thanks everyone

She sure did do good on the 2 units last night.

Remember with the transition to wet low carb canned food her insulin needs will go down too.

Since you both work during the day I would urge you to give the Prozinc a chance before switching to another insulin. It is much more flexible in regards to your schedule and sticking to a 12/12 shoot time and it needs less testing during the cycles once you get established.

Lantus and Lev are excellent insulins but require close monitoring and strictly sticking to your schedule.

Harley started on Lantus and was getting good results but I work full time and sometimes long days and couldn't keep up with the testing, it became very stressfull for me so I switched to Prozinc. Just my story, but something to think about before you make your decision.

You did a great job this weekend.
