Jersey: Hypo Today - Lantus Dosage Questions Tonight

Today, Jersey had a hypo episode (http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=114239). She received .25 units of Lantus with an AMPS of 429. At +6 AMPS, her bg fell to 33. Thankfully, we were able to get the number up quickly with food.

Jersey seems to be extremely sensitive to insulin. We saw big drops on just a fraction of Humulin (which we started out on), and now it seems we're experiencing the same thing with Lantus. We started Jersey on .10 units of Lantus last Saturday, and it has been a challenge getting that dosage right. Her numbers seem to indicate that we may have missed several of those shots (air bubbles? fur shots?). A member on the board mentioned that we could have been seeing some bounces. We're on 12-12 dosing, although I have shuffled times around a bit when pre-shot numbers were below 200 in an attempt to try to limit the amount of time she went without insulin (e.g., 15 hours without insulin rather than 24. I don't know if there is any rationale behind that. Does that really make a difference?)

Anyway.....here are my questions:

1. She is due for her evening shot in 15 minutes. Her AMBG+11 was 280. Do you ever give insulin after a hypo?

2. What type of dosage might be right for Jersey? Do we need to go back to .10? (I read somewhere on fdmb that some cats become more sensitive to insulin after going too low, which is another worry I have about sticking to .25.) I have stared at Jersey's ss for hours, but the patterns don't make sense to me yet!

3. Is Lantus the right insulin? Just looking at my spreadsheet......it seems like we had better numbers on Humulin. Do I need to just put my patience pants back on?

Please, please, please....share whatever advice you have. Yell at me about not sticking to a 12-12 cycle. Tell me I need to get more +x tests. My husband and I both work during the week, and I am terrified of giving my kitty a shot, leaving, and having her go hypo while we're gone. We just can't seem to get a handle on this yet and desperately need some guidance!

Thanks so much!
Shelly

The drop method of dosing:

Take a syringe and some colored water. Draw up half a unit. Slowly squeeze out drops, 1 at a time, the same size. It may help to twist the barrel rather than just push it in. When you can get the same number of drops in a half unit, you are now ready to shoot drops. Figure out what would equal 0.1 units and shoot less.

Thank you for your reply, BJM. I know you've given me this advice before, and I thought I had it down. Obviously, I didn't. I've practiced your recommended techniques again this evening and hope that we're on the right track now.

Thank you again!
Shelly

No worries. I've been doing this a while and am fortunate to have a good memory.
