7/16 Bailey AMPS 266 - numerous issues post vet

Ok so back from the vet. heres the run down but we are waiting on blood work and urine tests.

1. He has dropped from 6.2lbs to 5.9lbs since October

2. His kidneys feel smaller than they should for his age - could be kidney issues -(his kidney levels were elevated in October over the previous year but still within range).

3. his thyroid has a nodule and the vet can feel it - he "shouldn't be able to feel the thyroid". In October his levels were 14. Our vet won't treat unless over 60 since slightly higher thyroid levels cause slightly higher blood pressure which can help increase blood flow to the kidneys which is a good thing with his age.. but too high and that causes issues too so its a balancing game.

4. He has lost a canine.. half is under the gum. Not infected and likely will reabsorb on its own. it could cause problems later on but at his age the vet thinks its better to wait see since surgery could be hard on a cat his age plus getting out half a canine is tricky and its integral to the jaw or something. So far no impact on the BG.

5. he has 2 ulcers on the top of his mouth either side beside his canines. Likely due to his chicken allergy. They aren't hurting him but in rare cases the constant inflammation over time can cause cancer. There is some treatments for it but best to try and control with diet - so we are going to switch foods to less chicken ones- or a lower proportion of chicken.

We should get results in a few days

:YMHUG: Lots of things to think about. The tooth issue once taken care of might help bring him into remission on a positive note. The nodule would explain the loss of weight. I hate waiting for test results. :YMHUG:

On a positive note he is in a good mood.. He is snuggling under my blanket with me,, hasn't done that for a while.

Hope removing the chicken(or reducing it) helps with the ulcers...sounds painful to me!

I would think the mouth ulcers would be painful.
It sounds like your vet is pretty smart. You could go to a veterinary dental specialist if age is the concern, if he needs to have that half of a canine removed. I am guessing it's a lower canine.

It's a lot to absorb right now. Kitty snuggles sound calming right now. Without the chicken or less chicken, the mouth uclers can clear up so that will help. Sending prayers for you and your kitties.

I have one suggestion....I suffer from mouth ulcers myself, and they are actually extremely painful. I don't know if a vet would prescribe bupe for a kitty with ulcers, but I honestly would ask for some.

I just wanted to mention something about the mouth ulcers.
I have had 2 people mention relation between enzyme and mouth ulcers, but I also have had other people say enzyme wouldn't cause mouth ulcers, so I don't know which is right but I thought I'd mention this.

One source is from the webiste of Natascha who makes raw cat food pre-mix.

Many plant derived enzymes burn in the mouth, since your cat can not swallow them as a pill or capsule. Some enzymes are only active in a low pH (stomach) or a neutral to high pH (small intestine). The other source is from one of my vets.
When we discussed about adding pancreatic enzymes for Lucy because of her chronic pancreatitis, the vet mentioned that she had one other cat patient who'was on this enzyme for pancreatitis.
It did help the cat with pancratitis, but he developed a mouth ulcer.

It is too bad I don't have any information on how to prevent that, though.
It still could be the chicken like you mentioned, but I just thought I'd mention this for future reference.
