Sub Q fluids and Insulin

I thought I would try this again since Dr. Lisa is around to see if I can get a response...

I am administering sub q fluids every other day to my Kitty. Does it matter when you give the sub qs in relationship to the insulin (Prozinc)? I am giving the insulin at 7 am and 7pm--in their an optimal time to give the fluids? It seems like the days I give fluids, I am getting higher bgs. I want to be sure the fluids are having no "dilluting" effect on the insulin.

Any thoughts?

I used to give Tucker (GA) his Subqs about 2 hours after shot, but we also did not use the same spot. Insulin was flank and subq was scruff. Subqs always lowered Tucker's BGs because he felt so much better after. When are you giving them?

I have given them at mid cycle (+6) and I have given them at +10. The +10 has been the one that seems to have given me higher numbers.

I am giving them both in the scruff--maybe I should change sites.

I think at plus 6 fluids should be absorbed in time, plus ten, depends on how dehydrated your cat is.
Hopefully others can advise.

you may be seeing higher numbers for your PS not because of+10 SQ but because insulin is pooping out and numbers are now on the rise

I don't know if my observations will help, because I am using a longer acting insulin, Levemir.

I have noted, as have others, that sub-Q fluids have a lowering affect on BGs. I give fluids the same time as the shot because the fluids are absorbed rather quickly, in about 4 hours because I give less than 100ml, but Lev doesn't peak for Gandalf until +9. Prozinc is probably going to peak about +6.

I would not give fluids at peak insulin time. I'm not sure if that's why you're seeing a rise in BGs, as dian said it could be the insulin pooping out.

It's not advisable to give the shot and fluids in the same area because it may affect absorption of the insulin. Sub-q's are better in the scruff, so you can pick the flanks to give the shot.

Just talked to the vet and she said to give the fluids 2 hours before or after the insulin and to give in different locations--like you all have suggested!

The +10 test was not the higher reading I was getting--- it was the pmps and amps following it and I wasn't seeing this with the +6 fluids. I will try different locations today!
