Hi everyone.

Today I'm posting as myself, but soon you'll see posts from Diabetic Cats in Need (DCIN2), as I am now a case manager for DCIN, which is something so close to my heart since many of my own wonderful kitties have been adopted through DCIN.

Yesterday we learned about Chester, a handsome young orange boy who was brought to the vet to be PTS, but thankfully the vet contacted Carolynn who is a long time poster here on FDMB, she goes by Carolynn, Fletcher(GA) and Robbie. Carolynn has agreed to foster Chester (aka Tiko) and who knows, maybe love will be in the air and he'll find his furrever home there.

You can read and see the wonderful photos here:

He is scheduled for a dental tomorrow, and we are trying to raise about $400 to cover the costs of that procedure. Any help you can give, financial or even sending some good vibes for an easy procedure would be greatly appreciated. Please, check out his blog post and welcome Chester to the DCIN family. Thanks to the vet for not letting this young sweet boy down, and huge thank you to Carolynn and her girls for opening up their home to him.

Re: Chester, DCIN foster kitty with Carolynn in CT

Welcome, Carolynn and Tiko, to the DCIN family. May tomorrow's dental be unremarkable. I will keep Tiko and his new foster family in my thoughts.

Tiko appears to be an awesome cat. He is certainly photogenic:

And for an adult cat to be this easy to bathe on the first day in a new home is remarkable to me. No nylon net need on this orinch, huh dian?

Jennifer, thank you so much for agreeing to be a DCIN case manager and for taking some of the workload off me. Bless you and thank you for your support.

Hey, folks, please help to make Jennifer's first fundraiser a successful one. :-D She has raised $55 of the about $400 she is targeting. Chester has his dental tomorrow, and DCIN needs to have the funds in place to pay the vet when he is picked up in the afternoon.

Re: Chester, DCIN foster kitty with Carolynn in CT

he kind of looks like Twinkie and twink no longer needs a net. but Bease is a whole different story

Re: Chester, DCIN foster kitty with Carolynn - update

Chester, now named Tiko, is home and resting comfortably. Eleven teeth were extracted today and Xrays showed bronchitis. He is taking ABs, getting pain meds and Carolynn will continue to monitor his BGs.

Today's procedure was done free of charge :-D DCIN is still trying to raise some funds because the follow up visit will need to be paid for. Follow up will include vaccines and to check on Tiko's bronchitis and see how he healed up from the dental.

Thank you to everyone who donated and kept Tiko in your thoughts today for a quick and uneventful dental. I'm sure that once Tiko is feeling better he would thank all of you too :)

Re: Chester, DCIN foster kitty with Carolynn - update

what a great vet and hoping Tiko's recovery is a swift one. who knows, with all those teeth gone, he could end up broken

Re: Chester, DCIN foster kitty with Carolynn - update

wow 11 teeth .. I bet that poor baby was in some pain .. glad to hear hes on meds for bronchitis now ..

Carolynn had to take Tiko(Chester) to the vet this afternoon, he was having difficulty breathing. She wrote this after getting him there:

Tiko is in the hospital. He has refused food all day and is having difficulty breathing. His vet was going to give him oxygen and start steroids. Looks like we'll be learning about feline asthma and using an AeroKat.

Tiko is such a great little boy and this is just not fair.

He's really in distress and could use whatever prayers/healing light anyone can send...

Many prayers coming for Tiko...he just doesn't need this, does he.

Get well, Tiko.

Do you suppose it could be after-effects of the dental anesthesia ?

What a beautiful and well behaved cat. And so happy to hear Jennifer will be case manager at DCIN, I can think of no one better suited. :YMHUG:

Tiko could use some healing thoughts. He's still at the clinic and will be staying overnight again, breathing is okay but he won't eat and has been vomitting. The vet tried wet, canned and treats, he wont eat at all. Blood sugar is doing okay, he was given pain meds this morning and Flagyl for his belly. Please keep him in your thoughts.

Dearest Jennifer and Carolynn,

Please include my hopeful healing thoughts and prayers for Chester/Tiko.

We're keeping him close in our hearts.

Please update us when you can.

Much love and countless hopeful, healing hugs,
Deb and Nikki -- and, Giz, forever dancing in my heart...

Hi this is Venita. Jennifer has a chore this morning.

Carolynn will be taking Chester/Tiko into the ER vet this afternoon for an overnight stay to keep him stable.

If you haven't been following this event on Facebook, these are the updates Jennifer has been giving.

Thursday night:
Tiko(Chester) could use some healing thoughts. Still at the vet, no food, vomitting, breathing is okay. Vet is trying to figure out what's wrong. Mouth looks good, no swelling from dental. (J)

Friday morning:
Tiko is still not improving. On IV fluids, tested for FIV/FeLV both negative. Testing for FIP now and discussing chronic pancreatitis. Continued prayers and healing vibes for this brave little man. (J)

Friday night:
Blood pH is still good so not thinking DKA but getting fluids and watching for that. He's still in critical condition, not sure when he'll get to go back to Carolynn's. Prayers and healing thoughts needed for this handsome oranch boy. (J)

This morning I posted:

Tiko needs help!! He has to stay at the ER vet tonight to keep him stable. We don't have an estimate yet, but if I were to guess, it's $500 to walk in the door. Donation instructions here. V

Please help if you can.

Another update on the blog page. Tiko is now at the ER and the cost of two days of care is $1,900 to $2,500. DCIN is paying for that (even though it doesn't have the cash), and hopes that its supporters will help us pay for this care.

I can't thank everyone enough for what has been done for Tiko. He is just an amazing boy and deserves the chance he's been given. Little did we know what would transpire in a week:

Last Saturday 4/30: my vet had called me about an FD who had been brought in for euthanasia so my girls and I went to see him (he was named Chester at the time). I contacted Jenn (tuckersmom) and she started things rolling with DCIN. Brought Tiko home that same day, bg 239 at PM PS, started Lantus at 0.5U (was on 2u ProZinc).

Sunday 5/1: Tiko is purry and eating like a piggy. Using the litter box well. Growls when he sees or smells my other kitties through the French doors of my office. LB usage normal. Noticed he was coughing.
AM PS 225 0.5U
+7 198
PM PS 219 0.5U

Monday 5/2: Tiko went in for a previously scheduled dental. Ended up with ELEVEN extractions. Came home with pain meds and abx. Ate really well, LB usage normal. Told vet about coughing and she took a chest xray which showed the classic "donuts" of asthma.
AM PS 221 (no insulin given due to dental)
BG 239 after dental
PM PS 225 0.5U

Tuesday 5/3: Eating well, purring, now more curious about the other kitties. Played with the nip toys Jenn has sent and didn't mind Robbie hanging out with him. No swelling, receiving Bupe for pain and abx.
AM PS 244 0.5U
PM PS 239 0.5U

Wednesday 05/4: Refused breakfast; gave pain meds; he seemed kinda "blah;" youngest DD called me when she got home from school to tell me he still hadn't eaten and he was having to "suck in his belly really hard" to breathe; took him to my vet; Xrays not too different than Monday's; respiratory rate over 80; got dexamethazone injection and started eating (3 bowls of canned food) 3 hours later, resp rate down to 65
AM PS 214 0.5U

Thursday 5/5: Purring and happy at vet's; ate breakfast; was going to pick him up at 5; refused food for rest of the day-- vet was going to let me take him home because it was felt he'd be more comfortable; just before I arrived to get him, he started vomiting; vet decided to keep him overnight because something just wasn't right; gave him Cerenia and started IV fluids
AM BG 208 no insulin
PM BG 196 no insulin

Friday 5/6: very depressed demeanor; no vomiting overnight, resp rate 30; mildly uncomfortable on abdominal palpitation, mouth looked good; IV fluids continued; at noon he seemed a bit perkier but still no interest in food; afternoon urine test showed 4+ ketones; given cerenia and cypro
AM BG 208
Noon 156
PM BG 178 0.5U

Saturday 5/7: still very depressed; when offered food, vomited "large amount of coffee ground fluid" More cerenia given;
AM BG 189 0.5U

At this point I got to my vet's to see Tiko. He looked terrible. He sat up when I got to his cage, but then fell over. He tried crawling to me, so I picked him up and cuddled him. He was very weak, but there was a fighting spirit. Because of the amazing generosity, I was able to tell the vets that I could transfer him to the emergency hospital until Monday morning... there were many hugs and tears from the staff. Tiko has enchanted them all and they so wanted him to have a chance... which he now does.

How could anyone not love a kitty who allows this (pic taken last Saturday within 5 minutes of him getting here):

((((Jennifer)))) My best and strongest prayers go out for you, your girls, and Tiko. We will make him well, we will make him well...

That is an awesome picture.
