I took Lilly back to the vet today she has not been on insulin for two weeks, my fault I took her off of it because I am a newbie and thought she was having a hypo. I have been spot checking her for two weeks mostly in the evenings when I felt okay. I have been sick for three weeks now.
Anyhow her numbers have been mostly in the high 190`s and as of lately yesterday 208. The vet told me to start her back on 2 units of Lantus. 1 unit in morning and 1 unit in the evening. I want to know from experienced people here if this sounds right and what they think. She weighs 10 lbs now.

What dose was she on a couple weeks ago?
I don't "know" lantus, I'm afraid, but my gut says the dose could be less than 1u BID on those numbers.

Personally I with those low numbers I would start her back on either .25 or .5u hold that dose for 3 days while testing to see how it is working for you. You can always go up if it isn't enough but you can't get it back out of the cat once you shoot.

ACCKK!!

Please, only a teeny, tiny dose or you WILL hypo her. She reacts very strongly to the Lantus.

The recommendation of 0.25 or 0.5 units will take the edge off without dropping her in a crater.

To measure 0.25 - look at they syringe very carefully. With the needle tip as 'down' and the opposite direction as 'up', you want the downward edge of the plunger to be halfway between the upward edge of the 0 line and the upward edge of the 0.5 line. You may be able to see a tiny gap between the 0 line and the plunger edge.

Terri,
I posted a link there asking for some "lantus eyes" to take a look here, but posting there also would be a great idea.

I went ahead and posted over in the Lantus forum and asked for a little help. thanks all. I did test her just now and she was at 246 I think she is still very stressed from going to the vet today, she just hates it.

Terri

Terri,
Where is she in terms of the last shot? That 246 is at + what?

Carl

She has not had a shot since 9/25. I am supposed to start her back on the Lantus. The 246 was when I tested her just now at 7:37.

oops, sorry. I'm juggling too many threads, I should have remembered how this one started

OK, Sept. 25th......so that's about a +450 hours, give or take. ;-)

I think leftover stress from the vet might be the root of the problem too. Just keep an eye on it. One thing you can try, to see what her pancreas might be doing - test her before her next meal, feed her, and within a hour or one and half hours, check her again. She should climb at first, and then you should see a reduction when her pancreas kicks out a little insulin on its own.

Looked at Lilly's spreadsheet today.

By Day 2, cycle 3 (the 12 hour periods between shots) on 0.5 unit dose of Lantus, she hit 89 mid-cycle.

She could go even lower on subsequent cycles as the Lantus continues to build up to a stable level, and possibly develop hypoglycemia.

You may want to back off to 0.25 units (have to approximate it in the syringe) as Momma of Muse recommended, unless you can be home and test her mid-cycle and monitor for signs of hypoglycemia.

On these 3/10 U 100 needles is not the lowest line on it .25 right down towards the needle. I mean it would be the very first marking around the needle?

Terri

You may want to use a magnifier to see - I know I have to!

The bottom line (nearest the needle) actually represents 0. Halfway between the bottom of that line and the bottom of the next line (0.5) is where 0.25 would be and where you line up the edge of your plunger. You may see a tiny amount of clear space between the 0 line and the plunger edge.

You do your best to be consistent at where you draw the plunger and line up. If needed, use an index card or other firm paper and mark the amount you are going to use each time.

Here is a photo - if you click on it, it will become a little larger.

yes I am looking at it with my reading glasses on and it is very hard to see, my goodness. I did get a mid day reading today at +7 of 125 and she is not happy. Back to hiding in the bedroom.
